Les Blogs 2.0

Monday and Tuesday I attended the latest Les Blogs conference (like last April). I loved it although I sometimes felt I was in the twilight zone! Most of the attendants were more fluent in RSS feeds syntax than in plain English, focusing on the speakers and not on your laptop screen was a big faux pas and you were considered as a total loser if you were not able to gather more than 50 Business cards a day! And all this did not take place in Silicon Valley but in Paris!

  1. Hi Eric! Looks like I'm going to be the first to comment for once, and nothing political in sight!

It sounds absolutely surreal! I can't imagine anything funnier, and possibly sadder, than a room full of bloggers all secretly wishing they were at home alone in front of their screens instead of in a room full of non-virtual human beings!!!

Nice to get away from all that heavy Christmas stuff too. Good call, and power to your lens.

  2. LOL. Yes Sab, that was a bit surreal. But very interesting too; actually a nice change from the general sleeping/dying economic situation...

Off to bed now. thanks for posting the first comment.

  3. Well, I can seen the person playing Celebrity Love? Match, but nobody with solitaire up. But nobody playing solitaire ;-)

  4. I love it! Here is a silly question: did anybody show up without a laptop? How many Mac's v. PC's? (just kidding). Very cool picture, thank you. Looks just like my neighborhood coffee shop, only bigger, and of course, no coffee. ;-)

  5. Funny to see bloggers gathering and swapping printed business cards. It sounds like a very archaic concept for those aficionados of the virtual world!

  6. Great shot Eric. Taken from the perspective of "being there". Can you tell us more about what they do at that sort of thing? Steal somebody's WiFi connection...blog about blogs at the same time...exchange virtual business cards? How often do they have this event? Can anybody attend?

  7. ok, i have to say...was your Freudian slip showing? regarding the bloggers being more fluent in RSS feed syntax than in "plain English"...and about a blogger's gathering in Paris. i think it's a funny comment.

  8. Could you explain us what is the point or purpose of such meetings ? Why exchanging business cards, is it a business related meeting ?

    Flore

  9. Silly guys : "come to meet my laptop". Waw, what a delicious idea !
Do they know there's a life on the other side of their screen, especially when it's off (what, turning my laptop off, you're crazy ???) ?
Remember me a King Crimson song : 21st century schizoid man...

  10. Hi everybody, just a quick answer to all your questions (I'll come back to this event later).

in fact although I sounded a bit sarcastic in my comment (and LOL Will for the Freudian slip) it was a very serious, interesting meeting and very much business related.

Basically a lot of speakers from all over the world (OK, 60% from the US!) all blogs related (search engines, publishing platforms, feed readers, etc. and many more. Do have a look on the link I provide in the caption or by searching "lesblogs" in the Technorati tags

  11. To the Collective: I have a question: is anyone familiar with RyanAir? My wife & I will be in Paris between Christmas and New Years to celebrate our 30th anniversary and are looking at flying on Ryan Air from paris to venice. We have never heard of them. reputabvle? safe? are they maybe similar to Southwest Airlines in the US? TIA

  12. I'd prefer Easy Jet ... Very similar operation and prices but they land in an airport further away but it is probably easier (busses are laid on to take you in to the central terminus)

they are both 100% reputable and safe. And for why go to Venice? At the bottom of this page is one reason, I'll post a few more on it over the next few hours.

  13. Will....I have no idea what you're talking about with a Freudian slip. Could you explain for us here?

  15. As to the Freudian slip...probably not per the definition, but...Eric is French, the French are big on their language, and in his comment about the blog-fest, he said that the attendees were more fluent in computerese than in 'plain English'...i would have guessed that "plain English" was generally of little concern to people in France. I just found it to be a humorous thing to say.

as to venice? we are going because because we haven't yet been to that stink hole. haha kidding

  16. Thanks Will, and you will love Venice. No matter what anybody says, it's a very unique place.

  17. Sorry, Will, but please… "the French are big on their language", isn't it a bit "cliché" or at least inappropriate on an english-speaking french blog ? By the way, if there were only one french-speaking american/english, i'd be glad to visit it.
    ;o)
