The little train to the Acclimatation Garden
In the Bois de Boulogne (sort of Paris equivalent to Central Park in NYC) there is a garden called le Jardin d'acclimatation (English) which original purpose, back in 1860, was to show the latest exotic discoveries to the Parisians (more than 100 000 animals, sequoias, palm trees, etc.) Unfortunately, none of these living creatures survived the terrible 1870 war against the Prussians (Germans). The animals were all eaten and the trees ended up in mantelpieces... Now the garden has been turned into a small amusement park for kids. To get there you can take this little train from Porte Maillot (17th arrondissement). Don't miss it if you come to Paris with young children.

I love that place. I took my (then) nine year old daughter there last summer. We had a blast!
ReplyDeleteOh, le jardin d'acclimatation!!! Un autre vieux souvenir d'enfance!
ReplyDeleteAnother childhood memory! Cool!!!
We just never know what you're going to come up with next, and that's part of why your blog is really the coolest of all cool blogs! Sorry, I don't mean to speak like a 2-year old, but this blog is just totaly cool and that's all there is to it! :-)
Thanks for the memories!
ca me rappel mon enfance quand j'y allais les dimanches après midi...
ReplyDeleteyou jumped in front of a moving train to take a picture ? you really are cool...or crazy ;)
ReplyDeleteAll the best to you and everyone for the coming year !
I guess every Parisian child had a ride on this train at least once. Eric, you are showing the most Parisian, but still the most unknown scenes in Paris. Great photo!
ReplyDeletedev> The train goes very slow. As you can see there is no fence along the track although it goes through public gardens. It crosses the street, and there use to be a policeman to stop the traffic. When I was a kid, I wanted to run after it and jump onto the platform but never dared doing it.
JM-
I went to the Jardin d'Acclimation last year when my sprog visited - it poured with rain and everything was expensive, but we still managed to have a good time! The little zoo/farm thing is cute and free anyway, as well as some good playground areas.
ReplyDeleteI must admit I prefer le Jardin de Bagatelle a stone's throw away, which is a really lovely park. Any pictures of that, Eric?
See "09 juin 2005" for Jardin de Bagatelle...
ReplyDeleteI love this photo! My son does too! He's a train nut! We're totally sold on coming to France now! My son is asking to buy tickets now!
ReplyDeletethis is my favorite park in Paris, where I take my boys every day in the summer. but we 've never taken the train because we always take the car!!
ReplyDeletepink rocket: if you go to France, be sure to catch a ride in the TGV, the coolest of all trains. They have sales if you travel during the week and buy your ticket online click here for English version of SNCF
