Paris, the city of love

I am always amazed and moved when people love each other so much that they have to let the world know about it. That is probably what these two young lovers (they have to be young!) felt like when they wrote this simple message ("we love each other") on this piece of "urban furniture". I took this picture at the Notre de Dame de Lorette Metro station in the 9th arrondissement - here it is from another angle.

  1. Very nice picture! Is the chain part of the global message? ;-)

  2. Excellent Fred... Well, I'm sure they meant love, not marriage!

  3. May the chain not be part of their life then ;-))

  4. Hello there! May I first say that I love to visit your blog! I found you by the way of MOMSter in Paris, my friend. I have never been to Paris, I long to go...so I live vicariously through your photos. They're amazing! I am very fond of this one, so many mixed messages here...The chain, is it to signify the strong link they share? or does it mean, like the saying "old ball and chain"? So many interpretations. Beautiful.

  5. I was walking down by the Seine the other day and saw that the bark of every single tree had been carved, almost to death ironically, with wild proclamations of amour and undying passion.

I didn't take the shot (fool), but I think I will, as a kind of foil to your piece here.

But why does it have to be young people, Eric?

Come on, don't be boring - go out there and paint the bollards red with love hearts next time you're in love - I dare you!

By the way, this is for you and anyone else who is interested: I'm starting a friendly photography evening at Shakespeare & Company, the legendary English language bookshop, where we can discuss our photos of Paris, on Wednesdays at 8.15pm - would you be interested in coming along?

I hope you don't mind me mentioning this here, Eric. Courage!

  6. Good thinking, SAB (does it have to be young people?)

I thought the same thing, though. Usually young people do stuff like that. More mature people are slightly more subtle about it ;-)

  8. Another excellent photo Eric. I won't try to decipher it, but how you caught this amazes me. I probably would have just walked by. I'll only counter the chain (ball and chanin remark), with possibly the foundation it's sitting on. Solid as a rock? Ok, ok, let's not get too deep about a bit of graffiti.

  9. I've been thinking quite a bit about the differences between Paris and London. Now, Eric has a fantastic eye for a shot, and I'm sure that his view of London would be equally interesting, but this picture IS Paris, and not London.

I love both cities; I know already that I react differently to each. My theory is that Paris is much more a city for people, and London for things. A range of people live in every arrondissment in Paris, that's not the case in London. The French have a boldness and vision where the English prefer solid conservatism. Lutyens Vs Houseman.

More to follow... might pick up the theme on my London Page.

  11. Yes, like some others here, the first thing I noticed was the ball and chain theme. But it's a great photo, of course! And everybody is saying great stuff this morning. My brain is shot, due to a nasty cold.

  14. Who knows? Could have been the 40-something couple I saw yesterday, macking on each other big time, in front of the Louis Vuitton store across from St. Germain-des-Prés church. They were sharing quite a moment; I really felt like I was intruding.

But, sometimes there's no where to hide, so you just do it, right?

I have also enjoyed the stencils graffiti in our quartier, including the one that simply says, "Je t'aime". Always makes me smile.

  15. The chain... it's all about the chain. SO ROMANTIC!

  16. Thanks Manu! If you want to see it it's simple. Go to Notre de Dame de Laurette church; it's on the left end side when you face the church...

I don't think the scooter wiull still be there though...

Lets Talk About spirituality and mental health

"When doubts haunt me, when disappointments stare me in the face, and I see not one ray of hope on the horizon, I turn to Bhagavad-Gita and find a verse to comfort me; and I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow. Those who meditate on the Gita will derive fresh joy and new meanings from it every day." -Mahatma Gandhi

  20. A few spams today...how unusual.

Ham, I know what you are saying and agree with you.

Paris Set Me Free, older people know that in most cases the love will be gone even before the paint is dried. Or like Tomate said, we are just more subtle...
