France 24, the French CNN?

Since last night, 7:30 UTC, there is a new news channel on the globe and... it's a French one. It's called France 24, and it broadcasts from Paris - well from Issy les Moulineaux, a close suburb of Paris (where I took this photo today). I am eager to see if the news will be treated differently than on CNN, BBC World or Al Jazeera (probably a lot more debates!). Anyway I am very happy - and proud! - that France decided to enter the world "image war"! And the good news is: you can all have a flavour of it for it broadcasts in French, English and soon in Arabic.

  1. Yeah, this is definitely good news. Hope the Froggies will be good! Especially knowing that the Channel is French Government funded... but run by Private Business.
I know, it's a bit weird. but hey, no surprise there: c'est la France!

  2. Awesome! I think I'll watvh the sneak peak in French so that I can have no idea what's going on and pretend it's a huge breaking story about the explosive fame and fortune of Eric and PDP! Now that's a news story!

  3. Magnifique! I have it bookmarked. Tomorrow I'll check to see if the English version is up and running yet. Merci, Eric.

  4. ooh i'd love to have this! I want it in French of course, but i have a problem with my windows media player so i need to try to sort that out. I don't think i will be able to get it permanently on tv though :( I miss having my news in French.

  5. From what I've seen so far - I enjoy the clean-line graphics and the unmistakably French présentatrice
(very sexy, without being slutty). That's what I've always admired about French women - they did not have to wear buttoned-up mens' suits to prove they had brains :-).

I have to say I just found this blog and I'm not exactly sure how...But I love it and I'm adding you to my blogroll so I can keep up. It's taking me all night to go through the archives. So any comments I want to post but haven't because I dont know if you backtrack, but I have to say this blog is excellent.

  7. This is incredible Eric.
One of the best things to have happened to Francophiles everywhere.
    Thank you, thank you.

  9. Wow!
I checked the website and it's cool to have a website that continuously broadcasts world news in three languages.
I'll definitely add a bookmark to Firefox.
I'll have to analize their way of telling the news, but I hope it'll be more objective than CNN...

  10. Very happy to have learned the news! Congrats to France. I will be tuning in.

    Nice pic, too! ;)

  14. We will get it on our Dish as soon as it is available in our area. I saw the man push the button on TV5 to send France 24 on its new path. I saw the Champs Elysee with its lights and 5 bands. It was fantastic.

  15. tomate; that's too true. You don't have to rub it in my face, though! I know I'm not cool and all, but now I just feel bad! ;oP

  16. Is anyone else having trouble leaving comments, taking five times a go sometimes? Tried to leave a comment for Ame today who kindly left one at my painting blog, so thanks Ame and sorry !

  17. Eric,

I guess I read your mind. I saw that there was a promotion at Tullieres Gardens (did I spell that right)?

It said that it won't be available on TV for a few years in the Americas. Oh well. I don't get my news from TV but I am still curious to see it along with Al Jazeera (which also is not available here in the States yet but for different reasons...no one yet has picked it up yet).

Hey Manny Hernandez, I know another Manny Hernandez who also lives in Florida (Ft. Lauderdale) and who also is a Cancer. Looks like you have a twin (though you look nothing alike) ;)

I hope the fact that the government is funding it won't have a detrimental impact on it's coverage. Personally, I don't completely trust any government and their respective propaganda. You know what I mean?

  18. France 24 had me as soon as the presantatrice appeared on camera. I recommend less footage from the field and more studio camera. Quite happy to listen to her (and feast my eyes upon) all day.

  19. Thanks for the web link. Strange that during the weather portion they didn't show North America at all. South America yes, but not North America. I wonder why?

  20. Hey, you forgot to mention FOX News in your post :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh please Bill, set yourself free from Fox! I used to like Bill O'Reilly until the build up to invading Iraq. Since then, he and the rest of the station might as well be funded by the Bush admin for all the unquestioning bias they have! At least get some variety by reading newspapers from other countries. A great way to that is using this as your homepage (or at least a favorite) Google News. It cannot hurt. And if more people had done that, more would have known beforehand that Iraq was a diversion from what we really needed to deal with!

I came back here to say that I've had France 24 playing in the background while I'm surfing the web. So far, I really like it! I learned that Iran has censored YouTube, the New York Times, and all blogs that do not have government-granted licenses! Several bloggers are in prison. I knew that about China, but not Iran. So glad to live in a free country!

    Thanks again for the link!

  24. Yes! I watched it last night. This is a great thing for those learning French. Not only do we get to practice our comprehension, we now have an easy answer for those who are always asking, with skepticism, why are you learning FRENCH? (To have access to another point of view, to understand the world from another perspective than the limited U.S. one.)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Me too Johnny! I just posted a message and afterwards, and IE error message came up and my post isn't showing.

Anyway, Luggi said, " Not only do we get to practice our comprehension, we now have an easy answer for those who are always asking, with skepticism, why are you learning FRENCH?"

I thought you were French. Was I mistaken?

English version is only up a few hours a day unfortunately. I wonder why they are doing that? It will be hard for them to find the non French-speaking audience that way. Which let's face it, is most of the world. Oh well, if any hears that they have it 24/7 would you please post it here?

    Gracias, Grazie, Merci beaucoup

  26. To Sara in Syria: your English is better than my French. However, you left some people out...what about us ugly straight guys? Whoopee! Welcome to the club, but be warned there are some bozos on this bus...

Seriously: welcome. Good to meet you.

  27. Soosha: tomate; that's too true. You don't have to rub it in my face, though! I know I'm not cool and all, but now I just feel bad! ;oP

Err.. I must have missed something here, no? Anyway, just welcoming the new kid on the block (or should I say "new kid on the blog") no worries. :) So how is life treating you, Sooha?

By the way, did anybody say there is a new French news channel now? ;)

  28. Hah, hah. Anyway, Suzan in Atlanta: French? Mais, non. I'm a hugger, not a shaker.

    ReplyDelete
  29. lol tomate! Because I'm so not cool you couldn't possibly be refering to me! Kidding, of course. I'm doing pretty god, thanks.

  30. A lot of people told me it does not broadcast in English... In fact it does not broadcast in English 24 hours but only in the evenings (French time) apparently.

I watched a little more tonight and it's not bad.

I forgot Fox news in my post, it's only because we do not get it here. It's not an international channel like CNN or the BBC, is it?

Jeff. You crack me up! (re Sara's comment!)

To everyone. Sorry for the problems with Blogger, I have been trying to switch to the beta for weeks now but it would not let me do it yet...

    ReplyDelete
  31. Luzzi, a hugger not a shaker? I don't get it :(

Eric, I just realized that to watch France 24 would be DISLOYAL of me! Afterall, I live in Atlanta: Home of CNN!!! But it is also home of Coca-Cola but I drink Dr. Pepper. I guess I'm just a rebel.

I would occassionally have it up on the web while I was on, IF it was in English! Tell them to get it together! LOL...seriously though...tell them for me.

  32. Magnifique! J'ai hâte de le voir ici au Québec! Par ailleurs, il y a des tas de jeunes pros en France en mesure de réaliser des émissions en arabe!

Sara, I have many Jewish friends in France, and only one, a refugee from Brazil many years ago, speaks fluent Hebrew. Actually, many Jewish Frenchpeople also speak Maghrebian Arabic. as well as Ladino.

  33. I'm just back from a few days away and it's funny to catch up on the comments. These are particularly good!

I agree with Haxo in that a European version would have been great to see besides EuroNews (same thing every 15 minutes). Besides, I'm hoping the French station doesn't broadcast 24 hours of debates! The regular French tv debats is enough!

Debates vs Fox news though? Give me a debate any day!

  34. In October last year, new rules came into force, which meant some lenders were forced to withdraw mortgage products temporarily in November and defer some lending until they had made sure they had complied with the rules properly.
Separately, the Bank of England said that consumer credit rose by 1.5bn in December, more than the 1.4bn expected and above the 1.4bn reported in the previous month.

The increase in approvals seem to show that stabilising house prices are luring buyers back to the market after five interest rate rises in a year-and-a-half.
