Red Wallace Fountain

I already told you about the Wallace Fountains (Les Fontaines Wallace), named after Sir Richard Wallace - a very wealthy AngloScottish-French philanthropist who used part of his money to improve the life of Parisians. Well, there are still 108 of these still up and running fountains throughout Paris (the first one was installed in 1875), but it's the first time I see a red one! I found it at the Porte de Versailles, Sunday, right after my speech.

  7. Alas, there is another red Wallace fountain avenue d'Ivry, close to the big Tang Frères chinese products store. Color is just horrid.
    :(
Sorry to learn this seams done on purpose and spreading. I like so much our nice Paris green paint they used to have.

There's a Wallace Fountain in Place des Abbesses in Montmarte but I don't know if it's red.

Hopefully not, green suits them much better.

  11. Eric, you were correct. Despite his Scottish surname, Sir Richard Wallace was indeed English.
Perhaps Anonymous is a mischievous Scot hoping to disprove our reputation for meanness, which is of course just a nasty rumour spread by the Anglos.
I think a darker red would have been more appropriate.
Anyway, must get on with stripping the wallpaper off the walls, we're moving house next week.

  12. i think I have to go with the green, too. I wonder what or who spurred the new hue. We are all so terribly up to date on all the latest changes of the moment in Paris, Eric! Merci!

  13. How fashionable we all are to critique the colors of fountains! I did not remember Sir Richard, but maybe they painted the fountain red so it would stand out and people would notice it more. :) Red is not my favorite color, but this one is quite interesting with its backdrop of green and white. How festive!

  15. The one I'm most familiar with is the green one in front of Shakespeare & Co. Must say, I like this red one a lot!

  16. I like having one, or perhaps two, rouge Wallace fountains. However, the traditional Paris vert is preferred for all the remaining.
