Russes

Yesterday I walked by the Pont Alexandre III and found out that they had installed a new monument not far from it (on the place du Canada)! It was made by Russian artist Vladimir Sourovtsev, it's dedicated to the Russian soldiers who fought with the French against the Germans during WWI. I must say I did not know they did (5 000 of them died actually...). I love the perspective with the fall /autumn colors.

  1. The prospective and colors are wonderful. I especially love the grazing horse. It makes the animal and the human more emotionally accessible somehow.

  2. Whoops. I meant "perspective."

  3. What I like most is that it echoes the mounted horseman beyond it, but it is more human-scale -- a lower pedestal and an unmounted soldier.

  5. ...being from Canada, I always try to visit Place du Canada when I'm in Paris...how strange is that?...by the way we can 'feel' fall in the background...only six months until April :)

  6. Beautiful autumnal scene and a fitting memorial to those who gave their lives.

  7. That really is beautiful. I wonder what the soldiers from that era would think of it? Would they think it a fitting memorial? I think it is so calm and peaceful, a beautiful tribute.

  9. Let me add my kudos for this beautifully composed shot. I can't remember ever seeing a statue of an un-mounted soldier like this—it's so UN-warlike. Nice.
