A tribute to Aznavour

I already showed you the front of the Olympia (probably the most famous music hall in Paris), but it was never totally covered with a huge poster like this... They only did it because they are currently hosting Charles Aznavour, a super famous and loved French singer who had not performed there in... 55 years! For yes, ladies and gentlemen, Charles Aznavour was not exactly born yesterday! He's going to be 88 soon, but still sings like he were 20! Check that.

  1. Thank you for this, Eric. I have listened to Aznavour since I was a teenager (I'm now over 60). I have seen him numerous times in San Francisco and have almost all of his albums. Are you going to his show? If only I could get to Paris. It would be a dream for me to see him there.

  2. Just checked the clip - he is just riveting! I bet there won't be any tickets left for this show. Thanks for another cool tidbit, Eric!

  5. I have lots of Aznavour on my iPod playlist—je l'adore depuis bien longtemps! My fave? Paris au Mois d'Aout (a classic). I was good friends à l'époque with the niece of Bruno Coquatrix, so I saw some amazing people at the Olympia (Jacques Brel, Dylan, the Moody Blues), but of course I never saw Aznavour. I'll bet he still puts on a great show!

  7. Ah, the Olympia. One of my favorite albums always has been The Grateful Dead's "Europe '72", and the best tracks are 'Jack Straw', 'China Cat Sunflower' and 'I Know you Rider'. Recorded where? I finally paid attention and yes, at the Olympia: May 3 & 4,1972.

    Hmm...forty years later would be May 3, 4, 2012...

  8. I'm glad you like Aznavour, he's a great signer.

One of my favorite songs by him is Mourir d'aimer actually.

  9. Merci Eric ..... I agree with everyone ... he is just a wonderful singer. I saw him in Sydney in the early 70s and fell in love with him and the french language. I have seen him a couple of times on Le Journal recently and it is amazing that he still looks so vital!

  10. Well, here is my new thing to learn for today! (and first thing in the morning, too!) I've never heard of Charles Aznavour, but I know I'll be listening in the future. For those who have been fans for years, this would be a once in a lifetime event, don't you think? Amazing.

  11. Thanks, Eric. I listened to him years ago and didn't know he was still singing. I have the Charles Aznavour rose in my garden. It's white with a dark pink edge, just beautiful.

  13. Oh how I wish I had been at the Olympia to see Aznavour. Sigh. I'm hoping he makes it back to Montreal again soon. Thanks for the post!

  14. Ah, Aznavour!!! I love Aznavour but I wouldn't say he sings like he did when he was 20. He can still sing, but not quite the same. He is, however, a phenomenal entertainer, song writer, actor, musician, and it's not just the voice but also the interpretation of the song that is amazing.
