1st of May desmonstration

I was not in Paris today, but I anticipated the various Union marches that generally take place on the first of May (I took this photo during a recent demonstration). This year though, no less than 3 official marches took place: the one of the unions, the one of the extreme right party and the one of Nicolas Sarkozy, who is currently running for his reelection. On a different note, I just saw on the news that the best restaurant in the world in not in Paris, nor even France, but in Denmark! The place is called Noma and this decision initiates from  Restaurant Magazine, a British publication - which might explain the reason why the first French restaurant is ranked 12th...

  1. I came across the extreme right party's demonstration today at Opera. Marine le Pen was going to or already had spoken.

I was just reading the FT before PDP and they mention that the #1 restaurant will be in London at Claridges during the Olympics. What the heck, I signed up to GET in "line" for a dinner reservation. now I need two years to save up to pay for it, if I really get a seat, and if I would really go.

  2. This is a great shot. Look at those colors! I like the guy on the left looking straight at the camera. I'd love to know what he's thinking. We should have a caption contest.

  3. Since we live in a small town in a very rural area, it is quite rare to see a demonstration. And even if there is one locally, it is usually small enough that you can count everyone involved in just a minute! But if people are passionate about something, I am glad they can express their feelings in a civilized manner.

  4. Saw President Sarkozy's rally (on TV) at the Trocadero with the ET providing a magnificent backdrop. All very Imperial. Will it be enough to save him however?
The sun was shining! - or had they installed huge sun lamps specially for the occasion?

Eric, tut! tut! As you know very well, the Brits are scrupulously fair when considering all things French - and vice-versa of course! I am sure that Prime Minister Cameron will be devastated (ROFL) if his close chum President Sarkozy were to lose. :-)

  5. There's a hilarious photo of Sarkozy at the Trocadero rally on the BBC website. He looks like he's being blown down the street with the Eiffel Tower leaning behind as if it was calling after him, "...and don't slam the door on your way out!"

  6. It's good to see a demonstration photo on PDP. I think it's been a while since the last one.

As to best restaurant: I was in England only once, many years ago, and I was not dining in expensive places. Even then, I was less than impressed with the typical meals in restaurants. Great Britain is worthy of respect for many things but, after all, any nation that would invent something like a scone...

  7. just came back from 10 days in beautiful - but rainy - Paris. Enjoyed every moment of my stay and since main focus of trip was to visit family the weather was not an issue. However, even in the rain Paris is gorgeous!

flew out of CDG yesterday morning and it was a treat not to have much traffic due to the holiday.

  8. Jeff, you've been eating the wrong scones. The stale ones we keep for tourists.
Food is very much in fashion in the UK theses days. Chefs are the new TV stars. The only problem is that we sit watching all these great food programmes while eating heated up ready meals!
    I suppose it's a state of mind thing. ;-)

What I like about eating in France is that MOST food, even in the most humble establishments is good, something which certainly cannot be said about the UK.

  9. In San Francisco, Calif., the May Day protests were dominated by the Occupy Wall Street activists. However their demonstrations were marred by vandalism in San Francisco -- 26 people were arrested. I was trying to go to the art museum, and by some strange fate got caught up in the middle of police and protesters. What a crazy mess, I went home.

I too heard about that restaurant in Denmark -- there was an interview with the chef on France24. I asked Bettina (a PDP fan from Denmark) if she ever heard of the chef and restaurant; she had nothing but good things say about them. But, the waiting list is long she added.

  10. I love this colorful shot, Eric! I never did see any of the Occupy Wall St. folks who were demonstrating around town—but I did see a lot of police officers.

  11. The best restaurant is the one where you enjoy the meal with that someone special :)...even MacDonalds or your local fish&chips spot can be considered..
