Back to school...

That's it! The end of the summer vacations is close. A lot of people have started coming back, as many start working today (Monday 23) to prepare La rentrée (back to school), a very important moment for business. I thought this sign was very appropriate and pretty aesthetic in a way. It's funny to see that this shopkeeper was probably too lazy to make a new sign on a computer: he obviously erased the one of last year and changed the dates manually!

  1. I guess the Summer must end eventually. & I shouldn't complain, we are lucky here in NY, school doesn't start until after Labor Day! which for many is September 7th or 8th.
I like that this shopkeeper decided to reuse. It wasn't so obvious to me Eric, you don't miss anything!

  3. I agree Tomate, where did this summer go? School starts here on Tuesday, August 24.

  4. I know a lot of people love the summer, but the first cool breezes of autumn are always a welcome relief; it is my favorite time of year. Here in Pennsylvania, our summers are usually quite hot and humid. This summer was apparently one of the hottest on record.

Like Lily said, our students start school on Sept. 7th, which isn't too far off. So I am very happy to see this sign, and there IS something aesthetically pleasing about it, or you just made it that way with your talented camera work!

  5. We, too, have been suffering jungle weather. (Back to the elephant?) Summer is not over. I took my mother to see pieces of the Dead Sea Scrolls and then sat outside at my favorite pizzaria: Psycho Suzy's. A lovely evening.

But then, I don't worry about school...

  6. Considering what a horrible summer this year has been weather-wise, going back won't be as difficult as usual. I like that you caught the small modifications of the shop keeper Eric, but did you think that maybe not everyone uses a computer Eric? Not even in this day in age? LOL

  7. You're very observant, Eric! It may be a drag for visitors to the city in August because so many places are closed. But when I lived there, I loved Paris in August—felt like I had the city all to myself.

  9. I'd have loved to be still off today... But no (I even started again last week...)! This shopkeeper has still one day left of vacation. Wish him/her to enjoy it.
Martin, thanks for sharing this Swedish proverb. Lucky me, I've had a summer this year, and the previous year too, and even the year before the previous. I've learnt to take a lot... as a huge need too. Hope not too much taken. Hope not stolen... Do hope so.

  10. :) lovely posts.... I know quite a few French people (admittedly none with school going children) staying AT HOME BECAUSE everybody else is gone... But it does feel that Paris belongs to the tourists (which again is not a bad thing - one has really a lot more space and less hassle on the streets and in the trains/metros).
    Love the Swedish proverb too....

  11. Nice frame ; this shopkeeper does not seem lazy to me but pretty tidy.
Needless to say I'm glad Eric has never sticked this so far on parisdailyphoto.com screens ...

  12. School starts today (8/23) here in Florida. And it is a very heavy rain day. Good day to stay home. Don't envy the kids on their first day at school.

  13. So funny! I am not ready for school to start, and I'm the teacher! Since we homeschool, we can start anytime we want, and we've already started a bit, but I want to keep summer alive as long as possible.

  14. A three weeks break is becoming the standard among my French colleagues during summer. Today, this is really the Back to school of all tanned faces, crossed into corridors at work... !
Though, the main back to school for French students will only take place in ten days, the 2nd of September.
Summer continues and I'm still feeling in summer. If I could get the sun through my computer screen that would just be heaven. A bit like homesun maybe! Christie, this is your comment, which makes me think of that. I could not agree more with you :)

  15. @Helena. [I just made a similar post few seconds ago! :D'] We have two ways of interpreting this: either we're not very original or great minds think alike ;-)

@Ann [So I am very happy to see this sign, and there IS something aesthetically pleasing about it, or you just made it that way with your talented camera work!]. Actually I loved the sign in itself, that is why I photographed it.

@Michael [but did you think that maybe not everyone uses a computer Eric?] Er... Actually no, it did not cross my mind! It would be like refusing to use a microwave oven unthinkable!

@Alexa [ I loved Paris in August—felt like I had the city all to myself.] That is exactly how I feel!

@Martin [A life without love is like a year without summer.] And THIS is a Swedish proverb?!

@Flore [ I'm glad Eric has never sticked this so far on parisdailyphoto.com screens ...] ;-)

  16. I just got back to the hotel after walking around all day in CDG and it looked and felt dead to me...it was a nice quiet, tho. Shops were still closed (as it was in Italy, too) which feels so strange as we would , in general, NEVER miss a day in business in the USA.
