(Sir) Winston Churchill played a major role during World War II and the French are pretty grateful to him (they also love his lifestyle - cigars, alcohol and no sport!). That is the reason why he has an avenue (in the 8th arrondissement) and, since 1998 a magnificent statue by Sculptor Jean Cardot that can be seen at the corner of Le Petit Palais (in the background). Beautiful, especially at night.
"cigars, alcohol and no sports"… I wonder (not really) which one makes you so french, dear Eric…
ReplyDelete;o)
If I had walked around a street corner and seen that I would have thought I was in the wrong Country..

I agree! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteChurchill statue in Paris. Wow that's cool!!
ReplyDeleteChurchill quotes.....
ReplyDeleteI got more out of alcohol than alcohol ever got out of me....
And, to a lady who accused him of being drunk... "Yes, I am drunk. And you are ugly. In the morning, I shall be sober."
Interesting "Churchill quotes"!
ReplyDeleteHe was a rather interesting, colorful, and also controversial figure, as newly released records of World War II Cabinet meetings reveal. For more on this, click here.
ReplyDeleteHey Eric!
ReplyDeleteI'm french and I live in London since a year and a half and just to say it's nice to see the good side of Paris at last.
Almost making me feel homesick! ;-) (almost)
beau travail!

Merci Winston!
Another great Churchill quote: "Democracy is the worst form of government except for everything else that's been tried." I fully understand Winston's love of a drop or two: I work for a city government (in U.S.)and it is a pain. But, consider the alternatives to democracy, even when democracy screws up (yes, that's exactly what I mean).
ReplyDeleteDictators ride to and fro upon tigers which they dare not dismount. And the tigers are getting hungry.
ReplyDeleteWinston Churchill
Eric, No Churchill statues here in Melbourne I think - but there is a National Park and a fellowship/scholarship trust http://www.churchilltrust.com.au/ named after him.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite quote:
ReplyDelete"Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen."
-Winston Churchill
Wow, I haven't been in Paris since 1996 and this certainly was not there then. I guess I will just have to come back so that I can see it.
ReplyDeleteThat's a wonderful statue and a wonderful photo.
ReplyDeleteHe certainly did make some great quotes.
Hi, Eric -- haven't commented in a while, but the opportunity for favorite Churchill quotes cannot be ignored. ;O)
ReplyDelete"Success requires moving from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm."
When told at a party by a lady (whose name escapes me): "Mr. Curchill, if you were my husband, I would poison your coffee", replied, "Madame, if you were my wife, I would drink it!"
