Gay Pride 2010

See, I wanted to make up for yesterday's photo which I really do not think meets the standards I want to have here! But I'm afraid this one is going to freak you out too LOL! Sorry, I have to stick to the news, and the news on Saturday in Paris was... the annual Gay Pride. I will spare you the zillion photos I always take there for they really look like the ones of last year, the one of the year before and the one of the year before, even, but I just thought this one was funny in its own way... And, did I mention the weather is gorgeous in Paris at the moment?!

  2. I heard human hair was going to be the next big fashion trend - but not like this!

  4. The photo says it all, Eric. Simple and chic.

I don't think he needs to shave. I think that he's a man in heels is the point. Though I hope he didn't have to walk very far in those. To the Anonymous flats-wearing chick, I'm with you!

  5. Yes, agony isn't it! Very shapely legs, but he definitely needs a visit to the beauty salon for a painful waxing :) mwah ha ha. It will not be pleasant. lol. We know, don't we girls?

  6. Lovely shoes by the way. Low at the sides just how I used to like them. I can't walk in them much anymore, they HURT! I finally admit it.

  7. That's what being a woman with vanity is about Lynn: pain!

Well, it's not that bad actually, let's not scare the gay parede guys willing to take a walk in our shoes, but yes waxing and high heels can really hurt sometimes.

But it's soooo worthy it ;)

  8. I'm glad the weather is gorgeous, anyway...

There has been a big controversy here. The gay pride organization rented one of the big downtown parks for the celebration. A right-wing anit-gay "christian" wanted to rent a booth at the event and hand out anti-gay literature and the bible. They said no. The Park Board said he has a right to attend and say whatever he wants, but he does not have the right to rent a booth. The head of the Park Board is gay and said what the man is saying is reprehensible, but he has the right to say it in a city-owned park. A victory for free speech, though the speech is bigoted and hateful. I have not read what happened (it was today).

  9. I guess the weather's so nice he chose to forego stockings? ; ) The lack of choices sure must have made life simpler (but definitely more boring) in caveman days - before they came up with all these stiflingly rigid gender specific clothes!

If waxing seems too painful, he can trace the footsteps (so to speak) of the bike racers prepping for le Tour - I just saw a video clip about why they shave their legs every day! Or, maybe he's getting ready to totter up the Alpe d'Huez in front of the racers on his four inchers dressed in that mankini sling thing and a multicolored wig?!!

    Woohoo!!!

  10. Jeff - isn't it both terrible and wonderful what rigorously honored freedom allows? I'm always amazed at this. How difficult these contoversies are. Such strong and heartfelt feelings. I always hope a controversy may help because it means, even if they're yelling, people are still talking. I'm so curious how it turns out there for your city.

  11. Oh Mon Dieu!! I thought it was the Wolfman...or Wolf-Woman!! LOL!! ;-)

40 and Fabulous in SF this year!! Isn't this the anniversary of your PDP visit to San Francisco M. Tenin?? Come back!!

  12. Jeff, your story reminds me of when, in the 1970s, a Nazi group wanted to march in Skokie, Illinois, which is a heavily Jewish suburb of Chicago. There were a lot of protests, but if I remember correctly the Nazi group was allowed to march.

  13. Just a small bet guys...and I mean the "guys" here on PDP...every single one of you have tried on your mother's shoes at some point. You may have been 5 years old or 50, but I'm sure!

  14. Your take on this year's parade is pretty cute, Eric. As for your model—nice legs, but any woman worth her Jimmy Choos would have shaved! Hey, that's just the opinion of another flats-wearing chick. :~}

  15. Love it. What a great shot. I could happily look at more of your Gay Pride photos, Eric.

  16. Terrific capture -- love it! What an attention getter.

  17. The women's secret is out: walking in flats just isn't natural!

  18. What a hoot! I'm with the flats-wearing brigade. Gave up the heels long ago. It makes my feet hurt just looking at this guy's pumps.

Petrea--I remember the Skokie controversy very well. It made for some very thoughtful discussions regarding if hate speech should be protected speech. Much as I loathe bigots, yes, we must defend everyone's right to spout nonsense. If I recall, there was a made-for-tv movie about the issue starring Danny Kaye. Called "Skokie" I think.

  19. I remember the movie. I was also in a popular play in Chicago (later, in the mid-80s) that highlighted the issue. Believe it or not, it was a comedy.

  20. That photo is PERFECTION...and like Jilly I'd love to see more photos - can you share more SVP?
I'm marching in the Cincinnati parade with PFLAG next Sunday.

  21. Looking at it again this morning, Eric, I do love how your shot captures a huge amount in a very simple image. Not just the heels and legs, but the fact that they're out in the open and also that there's no face and they're all alone and the pose and the setting and probably a lot of other things I'm not even articulating. And its provocative in its simplicity. Yet, its as simple a statement as the simple statement of just slipping on those stilletos. As you say, Petrea, "he's a man in heels is the point"! Excellent photo.

  22. I'm glad most of you liked it because I really love this photo actually. Not for the actual subject, but for its layout. I love the "lonely legs" in the middle of nowhere effect!

  23. Great capture, Eric! I might even ask for your permission to use it as my Facebook profile pic!

There was some fatal violence after the San Francisco parade this year. So very sad.

  24. Love the shot! Eric, you missed a good one in SF. The shutterbug in you would have loved it. The mood was great and everybody was having a good time. Next year, come and see it in person !

  25. The fatal violence was after the party in the Castro, between gangbangers, the night before the parade. It is the second time people from out of the area descend on the Castro and ruin it for everybody else. The police, again, did an amazing job.

I was in the neighborhood earlier and ended up leaving because you could just tell there wee too many idiots. I saw a drunk kid put his hands on a police officer, and the cop calmly and patiently told his friends to get him out of there.

Anyway, the Parade itself was peaceful.

  26. Bob shot! Wait, perhaps that IS Bob! :-). Almost looks like the legs are suspended rather than standing.

Eric, it might interest you to know the Out and Proud organizers of Seattle's gay pride parade used in their advertisements a similarly cut off photo of hairy legs modeling ruby platform slippers (a la Dorothy) with clear heels, the theme being "over the rainbow."
