French Cuisine at Unesco!

You probably noticed it if you came to France, food plays a really large role in our culture. Everyone knows how to cook - at least a little - and when you go to any restaurant you expect the food to be good! Of course things have changed (a lot of restaurants use ready made dishes now), but the demand for quality is still there. So I guess it's no that surprising that, as you may have heard, Unesco officials just declared “French cuisine” as part of the “intangible cultural heritage of humanity" (read more on the NYT)! It's probably a little far fetched, but it's good for our nation self esteem. And to illustrated this, here are some zucchini roulés. What's good, must also look good ;-)

  1. Ooh, you're killing me. I'm at work wondering what to do for dinner: go grocery shopping or go to a restaurant... Where can I get zucchini roulés?

  2. I think I spy: zucchini, ham, cheese, sage and tomato with a sprinkle of pepper. Can I try that at home?!

  3. Yes, I heard that on the news this morning. Unesco was praising the French in their attitude towards lunch (or the mid-day meal). It is about 2-4 hours long -- but not so in the heart of Paris. Many people eat their mid-day meal in less than an hour. I'm thinking, Unesco must be talking about the people outside of Paris. They still hold true to the old traditions -- very commendable, I think. :-)

    Yummy photo!

  4. Speaking as an American, I wish our culture could be more like yours. Please don’t change.

  5. Food has become such a subject in our country. I mean it has been a subject for years but what a mediatization now! Food Tv programs and food TV characters are as popular as numerous now. When I watch to these programs or listen them to radio, I often think to myself, "all these yummy pictures, speeches, and no tasting, what a pity"! pfff! To be honest, I'm having the same feeling while watching to your post, Eric...
"What's good, must also look good" true! And I also like "what looks good, must also be good". :-)

  6. You know what's almost more prevalent than restaurants in Paris? Expat bloggers who slaver over French delicacies to the point of devoting pages and pages or just the entire blog to pictures with accompanying eulogies of mararoons and cakes and croissants and stuff. So if you ever lose your job as a.. (whatever it is you do), I'd recommend getting into the French cuisine market - it's huge right now!

  12. @Sab " So if you ever lose your job as a.. (whatever it is you do), I'd recommend getting into the French cuisine market - it's huge right now!" Yes, you're right (and it probably has a lot to do with all these reality TV shows that revolve around cooking.

The only problem for me getting into that business is that I really don't like cooking. Not that I dislike it, but I have no "appetite" for it. I do not fancy spending hours in the kitchen to come up with the perfect dish (I understand that some people do though).

I'm not saying I cannot cook either - like I said it's part of our culture so you are exposed to it whether you want it or not - but I really don't enjoy it that much...

Having said that, it's almost 8 o'clock, what am I going to defrost tonight?! LOL!

  13. So Sibel sorry, but don't expect a recipe from me ;-))

  14. The problem with this blog is that we all feel like we are missing out on something great whenever we are greeted with a new picture. And I am sure everyone will agree with me that WE ARE! Look at Jeff, MaryB and Debs,as an example!!

  15. Oo, oo, this is the perfect opportunity to repeat a bad joke.

What happens when you throw a bomb on the floor of a French kitchen?
