Big J(D)ump at the Modern art Musuem

There is a fantastic museum near the Trocadero called the "Musée d'art moderne de la ville de Paris" (that I mentioned several times here). They recently worked redid the main esplanade which was really old and dirty and did a real good job. Only, recently, they installed this roller skate ramp, and now the place is slowly turning into a dump again... Weird.

  1. One step forward, two steps back.

What one group of people appreciate, another group dislikes. Governments cannot please all of the people all of the time, and often please none of the people all of the time.

  2. This is disappointing. Not only is the ramp unnecessarily ugly, it seems (as you and Julie suggest) to have regressed the area back to what it was up until very recently. If something like this absolutely *had* to be installed, couldn't it at least have been better designed? That said, I'd rather see it placed elsewhere.

  3. I preferred your posts in which you do not criticise things.
Your point about it perhaps being an inappropriate place is valid yes but the manner in which you expressed it was derogatory and unnecessary.

  4. A poor design decision in my opinion. Let's just hope they have learned their lesson since their big burglary and are remembering to lock their doors and turn on the alarms and cameras! They neglected to do so in the past!!!

  5. I think I walked past this area late last year & wondered what it was. I wonder if it's really a roller skate ramp, or if the skaters are just using it for one. In my neighborhood, they just use anything they can ride off of without getting yelled at.

P.S. I always appreciate your point of view, Eric. That's what a blog is for :-).

  6. This Museum was Built on the occasion of the International Exhibition of 1937. The Interesting fact about the Museum was, A thief took five paintings from the Paris Museum of Modern Art.

  7. Could someone please steal this ramp?

  8. The guy in the picture is more talentuous than I am at skating. The only thing I'd get if I tried like him would be (at least) a bump ;)... Now, I know well this area and I'm sharing Eric's words but I think this place is naturally a bit wild (I don't know how to express it correctly). Located near the Seine, not yet in the middle of Paris, it seems that it just has to be like that to me... Not the dirty thing of course. But the design... too much "suburb-like" for Paris? As long as it is not everywhere in Paris, I can stand it... But of course, I prefer the romantic part of Paris... which is still very easily possible to enjoy, only a few blocks further... with our beloved Eiffel Tower. Magnetic ET.

  9. Hi I visit your blog everyday. I agree that the ramp for those skate borders looks ugly. And you are entitled to an opinion. Keep up the good work, and show us Paris warts and all!

  10. It is odd to have a skate ramp in the middle of an area where there is an art museum...unless they consider it performance art? Our small towns are finally building skate parks with several ramps and slides for skaters and bikers and they are quite popular. Plus, they are out of downtown, and the kids are REALLY good about keeping it clean. They don't want to lose it.

  11. I don't have any facts to back me up, but from what little I've seen, it seems to me that there has never been so many millions of dollars spent on such a small minority. I don't like skateparks, can you tell?!ha!
And by all means, Eric, keep your opinions coming! Part of the appeal of this blog is that it's NOT just another pretty picture but real insights into the 'real' Paris:)

  12. I don't mind skateboards but they are so terribly noisy and this ramp is certainly no work of art.
What about those 'Hoverboards' that they had in the film Back to the Future II?
They are silent and don't need ramps.
I've just checked and unfortunately they won't be available until 2015. Can't wait.

  13. Yes yes yes I agree...
Pdp is a good blog for sharing real insights into the real Paris... Never had enough time so far to browse everything, so many ressources Pdp gets to own. I wouldn't care an exclusive dedication to all these pictures! Lol.
    Happy summer to all!

  14. I for one love your commentary....maybe too frank for some readers, but in the end of the day, it is what it is! In the US, skaters ruin the steps and edges of many monuments and parks by staining the corners black from grease...so giving them a ramp is a good idea, but just maybe not in prime locations....

  15. It's rare when I express an opinion here, it's true... But, once in while, I allow myself to do it.

    @M Was is that derogatory?

  16. Looking at this rather shabby-looking ramp, I'd have to say your comment was more fact than opinion. Anyway, they were asking for it—the people who'd be most likely use this ramp (young guys) are probably the least likely to clean up after themselves. Dommage.

  17. Eric: It was not derogatory. You were simply making an observation, as is your right. If others disagree, that is their right. ... Also, just for the record, I have nothing against skateboarders. It's just that, in a city like Paris, a little "decorum" - for want of a better word - in such matters should never be too much to ask for.
