Dead hostages return

Two poor young French guys got killed last Saturday in Niger after they were kidnapped in a bar by what is believed to be Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (Aqim) - see more here if you're interested. Why them? For no reasons, they were simply picked up by chance... I had no intention of mentionning this sad episode as, unfortunately, tens of people get abducted and die everyday in the world, and then I saw this paper in the middle of the street, just like this (I did not touch anything), partly wet because of the rain. It simply moved me.

  1. A sad, wet newspaper, with sad, heartbreaking news on it. I'm sure their families are grieving for the loss of their loved ones, but heartened to know that they will not be forgotten.

  3. What a great photo-journalist you are. A picture speaks a thousand words. What stories this photo brings to mind. Heartbreaking.

  6. It simply moves me that you were moved to take the shot. What a sadness is the loss of each innocent life. The randomness adds a sense of vulnerability and pathos to our human condition.

  7. A very powerful and moving image Eric. Thank you. We in the English speaking world don't always hear about events with French hostages. This is important for us to see.

  8. The rain will steadily soak the newspaper, then a shoe will step on it, and then another and another until their images are obliterated. The newspaper will be swept up and put in a waste bin and they will be soon be forgotten by us, but not by their families and close friends who will have to live with this pointless waste of two young lives.
