Scary tunnel!

No, Paris is not all about luxury shopping areas and chic little concealed passages! You can also come across dodggy tunnels like this that probably take you somewhere if you're lucky enough to make it through the other end before getting stabbed or robbed! I found it in a pretty residential area though, in the 15th arrondissement  (at rue Jacques Baudry). It goes under a bunch of railway tracks that originate at Gare Montparnasse. I hope this is not too creepy for you to start the Weekend!

  1. Creepy! It looks like something that would lead you to the Chamber of Secrets or the Shrieking Shack.

    Happy weekend everyone!

  2. Hey, it IS creepy. I'm in Los Angeles right now and looking forward to meeting the other PDP fans for lunch.

  3. Well..... it looks well lit, but I think I'd only walk through in daylight.

  4. Are you familiar with the NYC subway system? We have a few scary-looking tunnels like this and I admit I do take a deep breath if I have to go through one of them to get where I'm going—but I do go through, and so far so good (haven't been robbed or stabbed so far!). This is a really cool shot, btw.

  6. I feel I do not have to worry as I do not frequent this area....however, I am STILL scratching my head thinking if and when I would venture inside! Perhaps to regard the graffiti art?!? Most definitely in the light of day! Thanks for this provocative shot, Eric. Bravo!

  7. Isn't it ironic that these underpasses were originally built to make lifer safer for the public?

PS -If these are 'doggy' tunnels, just how big are the dogs in the 15th? ;)

  8. This underpass just seems to be here to aspire everyone who happens to pass in front of it! No, I'm sure the man and his dog are safe now but that's funny.

  9. It's great that you show us "the other side" of Paris as well.
I have friends living in the 15th and when I'm staying with them I have to pass a tunnel like this to go to the Metro. I'll have to admit that I walk a little faster in the evening ;o) I have never experienced anything unpleasant in Paris though.

  10. How interesting! We have one tunnel in Petoskey, it goes under a 4-lane highway to the waterfront, is much shorter and wider, and there is nothing scary about it. Is is normal for there to be graffiti in these tunnels? We just don't have much of that here. I don't know if I would enter by myself, but with someone else, probably.

  12. @Drummond LOL. OK, OK... I corrected it!

@Alexa. Well in fact the NYC metro is a little scary I must say, but probably because I'm not used to it ;-)

@Jeff. So how was it. I wanted to talk to you guys but I was in bed when you had this gathering. I wish so much I had been there. Any photos ?

  13. Now, there's something I did not know existed in Paris. Scary and creepy are very apt terms for these things.

  14. I did not know about these tunnels, Eric, and certainly would not enter unless it looked "populated" and others were passing through. Interesting post about the non-tourist aspects of Paris

  15. I was walking near Pere LaChaise and saw something like this on Rue de Roquette, I think. I have to admit that I shuddered just walking past it, afraid a clochard would be lurkng there.

  16. Creepy? Oh, I don't know, Eric. Safely seated behind my monitor I almost wish you had gone inside ;)

    Just kidding.

That is the Paris people never talk about, though, but very real just the same.

Personally, those are the kinds of shots I prefer. I do wonder what's really happening in Paris and not just from the top of the Eiffel Tower ;)

    Thanks for this.

  17. Would you really get stabbed possibly walking through a tunnel like this in Paris? Robbed, maybe, but stabbed? Just wondering if that stuff happens there? I was really leary when I had to walk through a long Metro passage at night when no one was around.
