New Paris Museum

I's not everyday that a new 97 000 sq feet (9 000 m2, exluding the gardens) museum opens in a city. And though that is exactly what happened last week in Paris. This new museum, called Le musée du Quai Branly, is dedicated to non Western arts and has, in total, no less than 300 000 objects on display. The building itself is worth a visit for it was made by famous architect Jean Nouvel and has, on one end (the one on the photo) a quite impressive vertical 8 600 sq. feet (800 m2) garden facade composed by Patrick Blanc.

  1. Wow. I'm so curious about the garden maintenance. It reminds me of that building at Bercy with the grass on the walls. How do they take care of it, I wonder?!

  2. Eric, the wall looks like a live being! We're doing studies of rock garden construction over here, using Aztec models--but this vertical visualization is a feast for the eye. Thank you. (Do you have any references on how they constructed this garden?)

  3. Yes! There was an extensive article with pictures in Friday's NY Times! I will definitely put this at the top of the list on my next trip.

  4. Hey Eric, thanks for posting this. I've been watching it being built but haven't been by in a long time.

Jean Nouvel is also the same architect who designed the cool building for L'Institut du Monde Arabe.

  6. > Terra vecchia : Ce n'est pas facile quand on est amoureux de la Corse de la défendre contre les préjugés, les généralisations et les procès débiles qui lui sont régulièrement faits depuis le Continent. A ce titre des commentaires comme celui d'hier sont vraiment déprimants.

  7. Very beautiful, also it's interesting how wild and naturific it looks and yet it is very successfully contained and does not go over the boundary with the next building facade...

  9. Is the vertical garden permanent, or is it a temporary installation to celebrate the museum's opening?

  10. Eric - Thanks for this photo and for those of the Gay Pride parade. I had walked by this site when it was under construction last spring, and I am duly impressed with the result. But - yeah - how to you maintain that vertical garden?

  14. I love it! But what about the maintence and the bugs!
I heard about it opening, but this is the first picture that I have seen. Thank you for your pictures. Living in San Francisco so far away, you make me feel like I am still there. Merci!

  16. Eric, we saw this wonderful garden the day we arrived in Paris... it was evening and we were walking rather aimlessly, trying to take in the beauty and the thrill of finally being in Paris. I took several photos of the garden, but with jetlag and excitement didn't even notice that it was part of the new museum. Thank you for the joy your photos bring us!

  19. Yes Tomate, right near the Tour Eiffel.

Ujima, I think I found the NY Times article you were referring to. I don't know how long it will stay on line, but others might want to take a look.

  20. The opening received quite a lot of coverage, including on one of the major current affairs programs here in Australia, because there is quite a lot of Aboriginal art represented.
