A man ahead of his (DS) time

Let me instroduce you to André Hannorat, a French politician that, I 'm sure, nobody in France remembers! I just like this sculpture - that I shot at the Cité Universitaire, where he lived the last years of his life. And though this man should be remembered for one thing that we still experience nowadays: the daylight saving time. In fact to be perfectly honest, he apparently "borrowed" the idea from Benjamin Franklin and had a bill passed at the French Parliament in as early as 1917.

  1. Well, good for Honoré for "borrowing" such a great idea. I personally can't wait until March 14 (when it starts here). Love this elegant shot, Eric.

  2. I can't stand daylight savings myself, but he sure was a head of his time. (groan)

  5. I like the sculpture too. It looks so modern. André Hannorat in his suit, tie and vest. The petina gives it something special. Yes, Benjamin Franklin, really hit it big in Paris. He was all the rage. I think perhaps he was more fashionable and cool in Paris than he was in the US.

BTW, I finished my Gothic bathroom and it is stunning. I went through every photo you ever posted on PDP, and I came up with over a dozen photos of flowers. I also hung the "public toilet" and graffiti toilet paper photo "Life in the Pink" because they are so appropriate.

Now I am working on my kitchen. I am hanging photos of food and flowers that you, Eric, have posted on PDP. And, I hung the photo of the men in the ironing contest. Remember that? I always iron in the kitchen. This is an inspirational photo -- repassage! I like this photo a lot BTW.

  8. Lois...such an artistic home, I have no doubt, and Tomate..."A head of his time"--you beat me, Carrie, and Michael to the punch on that one. Bravo! Hey,as Andre Hannorat might say, "It's not easy being green." ;-) And we Americans certainly know that Ben Franklin indeed loved the turkey so much that he wanted it as our national bird. He was a bit of an oddball. :-)

  9. I was doing some Web research on André Hannorat and found a photograph from his youth. It is uncanny how, even as a youngster, it’s like he was anticipating the honor that would eventually befall him via the Cité Universitaire. His youth: here.

Also, there is an impressive old short clip of him publically instituting the first time change.

  11. I didn't know daylight saving time was that old! I thought it started in the 70's...

Lois, I'm with MsM: will we see photos of your home?

T.Gary, once again, your links are great fun ;-)

  12. If only I could turn back the hands of time....
    If only I had hands....

Tall Gary, Are you related to Monsieur Hannorat by any chance? I detect a family resemblance and what with all those family snaps...

  13. The time issue is major. Sometimes, it is my time, sometimes it is not yet but in any case, when it is mine, I only have to leave myself going ahead... Sometimes, my time does not depend on the day, the month, the year I am living, but only the composition of this time inside other elements. Cheers :)

  14. Ms M and Thib, I thought of taking photos to show everyone. But then I got distracted because I decided that there needed to be more photos hung on the back wall. So, I am off to buy some more frames. My interiors are always a work in progress. Maybe I was an interior designer in another life. ;-s

Coltrane_lives, Merci! I am having a lot of fun. Oops! Maybe I should not say that. Once a man told me that I do not work because I am having fun. I asked him, "So, it's only work if it isn't fun? Do you have to hate it to make it work?" Anyway, there is a side to it that is not fun, and that is the accounting or bookkeeping aspect of being an artist. I am always living beyond my means, and that is not fun!

  15. Tall Gary, Merci for the film clip. That film is really famous; I had forgotten about it.

  17. Blue sky at last Eric ! After the 4 previous posts, this is highly welcome, as the sunny day we enjoy in Paris today !

I should think about bringing flowers in front of Hannorat's statue. I just love daylight saving time !

  18. LOL ; you like DST or you don't... it is a matter of circumstances! It is already getting dark over Paris right now and I'm off to the countryside for the week-end (in Vendée). I think I'll get two or three more minutes of light tomorrow but I won't even realize it or need them.
I love you Drummond even without hands ;) If your brain found your hands, you'd become the most wanted man on earth and won't even think of meeeee... lol ;))

  19. Not a fan of DST here...seems people always want to mess with things taht aren't broken. I thought it was enacted, then went by the wayside, and then brougth back in the US during the fuel crisis of the 1970's....
