Champs de Mars in the snow

I know, I know this is not the Snowy Eiffel Tower you've been demanding for days, but almost! I took this photo on the Champ de Mars, that is... behind the Eiffel Tower (which I repeat has no snow on it whatsoever!). It's really cold in Paris let me tell you, and we're not used to these Canadian temperatures!! This morning I had to take the metro because the gas handle of my scooter was frozen! But it's fun too; the city is a bit disorganized...

  1. You had to take the metro? Oh, no!
Seriously, sorry you're suffering over there, but this pgoto is exquisite! Merci . . .

  2. Also glad to see this post (was beginning to worry, but glad to hear that you're not on your scooter in this bad weather.
    Stay warm, Eric!

  3. Eric -- this photo is absolutley sublime. And so calming...a most welcome site this afternoon. I'm envious of your snow. San Francisco is winter-time mild and sunny today. Stay warm and thanks as always for brightening the day.

    Happy GF Alexa!

  4. Lovely photo. It looks like an impressionist painting. Stay warm, Eric.

  5. Great photo!
10 years ago my husband and I honeymooned in Paris. I love coming to your blog for my daily dose of Paris.

  6. You might have some fun with that scooter in the snow, Eric--once it thaws of course. lol This photo is so inviting (if you like snow... and I do). Would definitely love to be taking a stroll down that treelined pathway. Enjoy this winter wonderland in Paris, and thanks for sharing.
Alexa... I echo Tall G's way to go! BTW..."pgoto"? I thought you had picked up a word from Venice for a moment. ;-)

  7. OMG!!! My heart just swelled up 1000 times bigger. Beautiful, Eric. Double French kisses for you today - *muah* *muah*

...and in a small voice, ET Suzy asked, "Did you happen to take a photo in the other direction?"

  8. Ahhhh THIS is what we wanted! How pretty is that? Well Euronews showed a little snow on the Tower I promise you. Maybe it doesn't stay long on that material? Maybe the romance is so hot around there it simply melts.
This is a gorgeous photo, slightly soft focus. Are you still suffering, Michael? Surely this beauty cancels out some of the cold?

  9. Okay, with references to Canadian temperatures and scooters in the same post, I can't not comment.

Another beautiful photo -- I just couldn't imagine Paris with snow until I saw this photo. It's so peaceful, even the dog looks subdued. And I love the balance - a classic grand allee (sp?)

It's 10 degrees in Victoria BC and my back yard is finally free of snow - first time in about three weeks, which is very rare for us. Now we've got torrential rains and flooding.

Will the melting snow cause havoc in Paris next?

  10. It's a wonderful photo!
I don't know the snow, only by photos and films.
Courage! they are facing a very cold winter!

  11. This is just a beautiful scene with the trees outlined with the snow on the branches and the long aspect of the allee. This is how it looked so much of the time we were there. It was an adventure to be IN it, but it's also nice to be seeing it from the comfort of my chair in Rhode Island. Not that it's pleasant outside here--we have sleet and ice. Thank you for so many beautiful photos.

  12. Ooooh, Eric!! : ) C'est beau, c'est beau, c'est beau! I can almost hear matching muffled footsteps as the two friends wend their peaceful way through winter's gift to the city.

I wish I'd stayed another month. Growing up in the northeastern US and Canada, Paris winters are a breeze (so to speak!) for me. I just hope people aren't suffering from the gas shortage.

    Congratulations Alexa! Bien joue.

ET Suzy - that's so cute!

  13. Gorgeous stunning photo! Sorry it's cold and snowy, but it's so worth it that you're suffering so that you could bring us such an amazing photo. I love the two dogs playing in the snow. They must be loving it!!

Go Figure it's Alexa on GF! Way to go!

Oh and hi Lupine Lady -- welcome back to the US! Can't wait to see more of your snowy Paris vacation photos.

  14. With the inclusion of the lone figure walking their dog you have created a Cartier Bresson image, and he really was the master. Possibly one of my favourites of yours and a pity not one of mine. Night all.

  15. This photograph better be part of your BEST OF for 2009!!! That is a GREAT shot!!! Hope you make some cards out of it at the very least!

    (standing ovation for that one!!)

  16. Wow! Snow never looked so good. It is so much easier to appreciate snow when I don't have to deal with it.

  17. C'est moi encore une fois—just to say that I agree 100% with Tomate. Quelle photo exquise!

  19. Oh, Eric. I think this is one of my favorite photos ever--and it doesn't even have the ET in it!! And it has snow!! But it is gorgeous. I agree that this HAS to be on the "best of.." list this year. Awesome!!

    Merci beaucoup!

  20. Yes, this is a wonderful photo! Keep warm, hope it's not too icy and slick.

  21. Oooohhhhh...shooooshh!! How stunning this photo is! I'm walking in a Parisian winter wonderland now! This area was my "hood" when I was in Paris, yet I never saw it like this!! Merci!! C'est magique!!

Echarpe, gants, cache-nez and layers, Eric!!

  23. I agree with everyone here Eric, this is one of your best photos yet! It reminds me of one of your very, very early posts Family in the Luxembourg garden . It's funny to think that back then you only had 5 comments! Hard to believe...

Well today it will be scorching hot with a high of 1c. Whew, I might have time to change the hot water bottle USelaine gave me and get rid of that awful blanket I borrowed from Suzy!

  24. At 6.30 this morning, it was already +1•C in Paris.
    Summer's back ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  28. LOL Michael you are making me guffaw. Please no more, I don't want to sink to an unladylike snort.

    ReplyDelete
  29. That photo you linked to Michael is gorgeous. Yes isn't it interesting to see the change back then. Faithful Tomate was there though! Good on you Tomate! :)

  30. True Tomate has been my earliest visitor I think - and still is after almost... Er... 4 years!

  31. I took a picture of the tower in 2005 when I was living in Paris. I think that was the third and last time I saw something like this in 10 years of parisianism !

  32. Beautiful photo.
Strange that it is colder in Paris than here in Oslo.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Still, quiet and atmospheric.
Any time I've been in the Champ de Mars it's been full of tourists (mea culpa) and noisy kids.
At the risk of echoing most of the previous comments, a fabulous, fabulous, fabulous, photo, photo, photo.......

  34. Did French students have school today? Do they ever get off school because of weather?

  35. Oh Eric thank you for this image!
It´s lovely to see snowy Paris, but I confess I don´t envy you right now!

This seems to be a bit TOO cold for me!

    ;-)

  36. Eric,
When is your photo calendar coming out?
I choose this pic for the month of Janvier.
    Beautiful!

  37. Julien, thank you for sharing your ET photo!!! I like that word - parisianism. I think I'll use it.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Eric, What about if you stand in front of the Eiffel Tower where there is snow on the trees and on the ground. The snow doesn't really have to be on the Tower itself. Just having her in the photo is wonderful. How's about it? :-) hmmmmm? Pretty Please with sugar on it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yes Eric it's very touching about Tomate for sure.

Whilst I'm on the subject; Michael; you were my first. ;) LOL ! Oh yes, just over two years later....sigh... :)

  40. Happy New Year Eric et tout le monde! I'm glad to come back only to find this gorgeous winter wonderland!

Stacey Snacks - the 2009 PDP calendar is already out (scroll down on the left to the Zazzle Boutique products by etenin). I just ordered mine along with some magnets :)

  41. Michael: I have been back and forth this week...was here Monday. back today(Thurs) and here again on Sunday. Write if you will be here Sun.
Went to see the Dufy exhibition, and then couldn't help myself, I hit the sales. Rue Montaigne was nearby the museum(yes, I did some dammage) and the Metro Iena made it easy to stop by Galeries Layfayette. A REAL ZOO!!!

I told you on Mon.the Luxembourg Gardens looked like St.Petersburg.....well, so does the Champ de Mars from this pix.

And yes, I have four layers on and I was freezing today. Easy to get into hard to get into restaurants, tho!

  42. Best wishes for 2009 to all ! Fantastic photo Eric, you don't see this everyday (no every year) in Paris ! Well done. Loic http://brohardphotography.blogspot.com

  45. Michael! Your link - its kismet!!

I was going thru my PDP slideshow yesterday and I mistakenly deleted the photo of the family in Lux Gdns. It wasn't in the libelle index. I thought I'd never have the time to go thru all those photos again to find it.

And now,....!!.....I don't have to!! Merci a vous - its one of my all time faves, as is this one.

Just to give you all some perspective, I just heard that next week we will have record breaking temps in the high 80's F.

  50. Oh Eric, this is a photo to break one's heart. It should grace a book cover about lost and lonely longing in the city of love. It is absolutely beautiful and I would adore walking down there, all wrapped up with gloves, hat, scarf and thick snow boots and coat.

I bet the metro was warm though!

    ReplyDelete
  51. oh, that's gorgeous. would love to see a white Paris...

    ReplyDelete
  52. Eric, this is dreamy. I've been a lurker at your blog since a trip to Paris two summers ago.

Thank you for helping to bring the city to me in the midst of a cold Toronto winter.

This reminds me my childhood :-)

  54. Wow, what a view. I remember sitting on one of the benches in this area before taking photos of the Eiffel Tower 2 years ago with my family. I remember the verdant trees and the slight windy chill and to think, that was only the end of August.

Still, this picture is worth the take!
