Inside the kitchen of La Cigale Récamier

Those who've been following PDP for a while will probably have recognized Lynn aka PHX-CDG, who I had the pleasure to have dinner with last night (together with Michael and Susan, a colleague of Lynn's). We went to La Cigale Récamier, where I immediately found out Lynn was so famous that all the waiters knew her. Not only the waiters actually, but also the chef and owner of the restaurant Mr Gérard Idoux, who gave us a tour of his cuisine. Specialty of the house? Le soufflé! I personally had soufflé for starter, main course, and... dessert. You've got to try the place if you're in town, but don't forget to book... Along with Lynn, Catherine Deneuve is a regular!

  1. Woo hoooo!! Hi PHX!! I so wish I could have joined you for one of those souflees. Fabulous photo! Did you say hi to Cathgerine for us??

  2. Hmm, how about "Catherine" instead. I guess I was drooling on my keyboard thinking about the caramel souflee. How fabulous that you got to tour the kitchen!

  4. Now that I know all you famous people dine there, I surely will put it on my list (and bring my camera and autograph book!).

    What fun!

  5. Wow what a great time you had. From one Lynn to another! Beautiful photo of you Lynn.

  6. How fabulous! What a great shot. I feel connected to such famous people: Lynn, Eric and Chef Gérard Idoux. I can't claim Ms. Deneuve until you photograph her for the blog, Eric.

  7. This is off the subject, but does anyone know how to link to a particular post on PDP? On other blogs I just click the title of the post, but that's not working for me here. Ideas?

  8. Petrea,
Click the time that Eric posted the picture at, it should bring up the individual post.

    PHX,
I was thinking about out 2008 glasses from the picnic the other day!

  9. This is a fabulous shot, Eric! I'm not surprised to know that Lynn is the toast of Paris—she's so much fun!
Glad you had a good time together. I'm envious—what else is new?

  10. Sounds like you had a fun night out. Lynn is a celeb, eh? That doesn't surprise me. Nice photo of happy people. ;-) A souffle sounds too good right now. Will put this on my ever-growing list of fine Parisian restaurants. Merci Eric!

  11. Go go GF California Katie! : )

I surely wish I could have been there, too! Lynn, you look lovely and the chef looks charmed. You must tell us what the resaurant is like.

Today I was in Paris, too (well, in my mind!) I watched Is Paris Burning for the first time since seeing the actual damage to the Police Prefecture inflicted in the battle for Paris. I saw places I've only learned about from PDP - one scene featured the Lion de Belfort in all his glory! This incredible film shows Paris as it was in 1961.

I also want to plug a book I just got called Above Paris by Jean-Louis Cohen. It features aerial photography by Roger Henrard. He took amazing photos over Paris from 1950 through 1972. Between these two: fantastic Parisian time travel at its best!!

  12. LYNN!!!!!!!!! I want to make it clear to everyone that I'm your number 1 fan!!!!! You know that.
You know that wherever YOU tell me to stay in Paris that's the place I'm going to choose!! ;-)

You look great in the photo, I'm so glad Eric posted it.

When you told me you had just got back from dinner with M and E
I thought there'd be a post about it. Now a picture of the 3 of you would have been even more lovely.
Glad you all had a great time!

How about some making of pictures?!

  13. Carrie: "Above Paris" if fabulous. I helped the parents of a good friend move a couple years ago, and they gave me this book. I can't tell you how many times I've looked through it, remembering being in certain places, and wishing I could see the others. Great catch.

  14. Ooh, I love "Above Paris." My brother has "Above San Francisco." There are a few others.

  15. What a lovely photo of Phx! Tres jolie comme toujours :)

Eric, I also ate souffle for appetizer, main course and dessert at a restaurant called Le Souffle on a tiny street near the cross-streets of Rue Castiglione and Rue de Rivoli. I don't know if it's still there (this was in 2005), but it was delicious.

Guille: Thanks for the French lesson hier :)

  16. Jeff - what a gift! Petrea - I know the "Above" books you're thinking of - with lovely aerial shots - but they're not the same as the one I'm thinking of.

If you check Amazon, you'll see the Henrard book. The one you've seen is a much more modern color photo book. These are the best of thousands of black and whites he took and the review on Amazon explains how he did it. Enjoy!

  17. I'm also hoping someone can help with the name of this restaurant. I tried to go to my online dictionaries and I found that la cigale is the cicada, but nothing comes up for recamier. What does this name mean? I also wonder - does the restaurant specialize in Provencal food - that's what I associate with cicadas - or is the reference to something else?

  18. Wow..I know this restaurant! I believe it used to be on the rue Chomel, but with all of Lynn's business they were able to relocate to this new, prettier place! I am so glad to see that Eric is getting out again..he has been such a "shut in"!! LOL!!

  19. I confirm, it was quite a wonderful experience and captured well here. We had a tour of the kitchen, got to hear how chef Idoux is very connected to the political scene in Washington and Paris, saw the many photos of him as a child, and yes, the soufflé was to die for.

Over dinner, I realised that Lynn probably knows more about Paris than anybody I know. And Tonton, you're right. Lynn mentioned that this restaurant used to be located on rue Chomel.

  23. Wooooow !!!!!!!
What a wonderful idea this gathering sounds to be!
I would have chosen the same menu!
Soufflé is .....hmmmm yummy and I love it!
There is really something I like in the photo : the beautiful smile of Lynn and the sweet expression of M. Idoux, together.
    Superbe! Once again !

  24. An especially fitting tribute, as we salute all our hard-working flight professionals this week, knowing that they look out for our safety first and foremost. Certainly a stellar dinner party!

  25. Wow all this mention of Lynn and I've not been near Paree for years!! Seems kind of strange to me to see my name so often here without it being me. lol

Monica's right Eric - we need the 'making of' please.

  26. Michael I have a better idea. Let's not fight over this, let's creat a PHX fan club!!!

  27. Whaouhh! That reminds me another PDP dinner there, a few months ago, with Guille, Katie, and of course, PHX...
That was a great time for me. And I'm sure yesterday evening was a great evening for you folks ;-))
Eric, I agree with you, soufflé for starter, main course and dessert IS a unique dinner !

  28. Carrie, I took a look. Henrard's book is marvelous.

  29. I bet Lynn is quite the favorite wherever she goes. A very nice photo of two friends.

  30. Carrie: I too am mistaken, as I have the color "Above Paris" photo book. I'll check out the one you describe.

  31. PHX, you're gorgeous!! Well, as usual!

La Cigale Récamier is the place to have the best soufflés in Paris. I would sell my soul for their soufflé au caramel! Aaaah...

Thib, Katie, I remember this dinner at la Cigale with PHX. It was a lovely evening. As usual with the PDP folks.

How lucky you were to visit the cuisine. Did you find the soufflé's secret?! Tell us!

    Pont Girl: You're welcome. :)

Monica, I know YOU are PHX's fan #1, even if Michael tries to steal the place! :p
Got your mail. Glad that you like the postcard. I'll answer you asap.

  32. Guille, the thing is with you guys from PDP it's hard not to be a fan!

So Michael, Guille, Eric, Phx, when I get to go to Paris are we're going to taste some of this delicious food in Paris too??!! I need to be introduced to this soufflé or whatever you recommend from a great parisian restaurant.

  33. Just got a quick note from PHX apparently she just landed in NYC, so probably that's why she couldn't show up here yet.

  34. Okay, after I wipe up the keyboard after Caramel Souffle....Wonderful picture and great fun! I wish I could have been there too! It looks like a lovely place you would love to know those behind the scenes. Beautiful picture of Lynn and her friend!

  35. I'm an American who's been to Paris twice so far and I have eaten at this restaurant both times - it's my favorite in the city I think! The food is amazing and I love the chic atmosphere... Thank you for bringing back some very good memories for me :)
