Best baguette: and the winner is...
I already told you several times how bread - and especially La Baguette - is important to the French. I also explained how they cut their bread consumption dramatically since the beginning of the 20th century due to many factors including a drop in quality and the fear of weight gain... That is why the bakers need a little marketing! One of the actions they took (with the help of the Paris town hall), was to organize a "best baguette contest" in Paris... The jury voted at the end of March: now it's official, if you want to eat the best baguette in Paris, you have to go the 18th arrondissement, at le Grenier à Pain Abesses. If you're on the left bank you can still go to le Grenier de Félix, who won last year; I'm sure they haven't lost their savoir faire...

ReplyDeleteYum - there is nothing better. I actually did have their baguette when I stayed in Paris in 2008. Sometimes we couldn't wait to break into it and would tear and enjoy a piece as we walked home after a long day of exploring. I so wish I was there right now:)

ReplyDeleteI hate to advertize for something I haven't done yet, but I was told about mygenieinparis.com. They have a baguette baking experience that I am going to do in June. You are taken to a bakery and given doughto form into a baguette. You make other things too, like pain au chocolate. It may not be the best baguette going on in Paris, but you get to do it and take pictures!!! I can't wait!!1

ReplyDeleteWe're just back from Normandy where we are lucky enough to have a house close to several fantastic boulangeries. I've never managed to find real french bread here in the UK, even taking bread back on the ferry spoils it. I think it must be something to do with the water…
Gosh, you post a yummy best of Paris baguette photo and all of a sudden we are singing and dancing in formalwear here. Remarkable. ReplyDeleteYou got that right Michael. Salted butter would make that baquette parfait. I think I have been lost near this bakery once or twice. If I would have only stopped in. Thanks for the de-lish photos Eric (as always).
ReplyDeleteBefore we went to Paris last August, I tried to explain to my wife how much better French baguette was than anything we had over here. She agreed once she had tasted the real thing.
ReplyDeleteI still recall the advice my uncle gave me on my first visit to Paris. I wonder if it still stands. He said: Go to a patisserie, not a bakery, for a real baguette - and always ask for a baguette "pas trop cuite" (not too cooked). It served me well while I was there.
Oh, I will have to make bread today! These look absolutely scrumptious. I know mine won't be as authentic, but I'm looking forward to the day that I can try a "real" baguette!

i have made baguettes before...i tried Julia's and Jacques...not as good to win the best, but not bad. put some fromage and jambon and you are in business.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, that's awful of you to tease us like that! I wanted to tell you concerning your comment "Friendly Parisian (yes, it does exist!)", that when I was in France last May, the Parisians were some of the nicest people I met while in Europe.

Rustica Bakery makes the only baguette in Minneapolis that deserves to be called a baguette. Real Paris flavor and texture. The are available only in a handful of retail locations, and they are always sold out by 4:00 pm.

I LOVE your baguettes! To think I was so close to last year's winner when I was in Paris. I stayed at a hotel near the Covention Metro stop on Rue Vaugirard! We have "French Baguettes" here in Canada but they are NOT the same!

I tried this year's best baguette at Le Grenier a Pain, when I visited Paris! I bought a baguette and two sweet pies and they were really delicious....
