Crèpes Flambées

I had dinner with my father last evening and we both had Crèpes flambées for desert. For those who would not know about this delicious desert, it's made of crèpes (sort of super thin pancakes) on which the waiter pours hot Grand Marnier that he sets on fire. Very impressive and... very good! BTW, since a lot of people ask me for good restaurant advice, here is one: Le Bistrot la Muette. It's actually part of a "chain" of 7 restaurants all based on the same principle: an all inclusive menu with excellent - I'm talking excellent - dishes. Check their site and don't go thinking it's a tourist place; the crowd that was there last evening was typical of the 16th arrondissement!

  3. Oh, yum! I pulled up the menu, and I would have a hard time choosing. Everything looks so good. Good value, too. Thanks for the tip. Someday, when I finally get back to my beloved Paris...

"Don't you just love it when they set the food on fire?" This is an everyday occurrence in my home, Alexa. lol.

  14. Beautiful shot, Eric! Sounds like a great place to eat.

We stayed in the 16th when we were there in '06. I found it to be convenient. We were close to the ET! ET! ET! and everything else was mere minutes away on the Metro.

  15. I had a crepe flambe at a restaurant on blvd St. Germain that is no longer there: Bistro Cote du Mar, I think. It was a fabulous meal and a great dessert.

  16. great picture! The Bistro des Deux Theatres (same "chain") in the 9ième is one of my favorite in Paris.

  18. I don't know Bistro de la Muette yet but I used to often go to Bistro du 17e when I worked in this area. I loved this restaurant. All of what they say on their website is actually true (in my memory). This reminds me of my beginnings in professionnal life because my boss - at this time - and I often went there with clients. I was 15 years old younger, and thinking of that makes me feel odd... of course! My previous boss has that in common with you Eric that he really knows how to live and has excellent relationships with people. That is so big in life that! He brought me a lot. Should I say such as you? Yes I should too :)
Crêpes flambées is one of my favorite desserts ;) and your photo is super well done. So Eric, did you choose this restaurant yourself or is it your father? I have your post of your dad from December 2008 in my mind. Hope all is fine for him.

  19. Another great photo, Eric, for an obviously great moment with your father.
Did you re-work the photo, to get this bright blue?

And thanks for the address ;-)

  20. Yum, yum. These crêpes look delicious, even though you wrote them with an accent aigu!

I'm sure you were so excited that it was a 'faute de frappe'! :)

  21. Spectacular photo and looks almost dangerous! I've never seen crepes flamed on a plate before. As a child, in posh London restaurants, we used to see the waiter make Crepes Suzettes. I loved them and wonder if they are the same. I imagine so. I wasn't allowed the Grand Marnier but had jam instead!

  24. I went on their site and noticed bistro Bretueil as part of their chain. I was in Paris one New Years Eve and the Hotel suggested it. I was quite surprised at how nivce it was, and it certainly was full of Parisians looking for a well priced nice meal. Not cutting edge or gourmet, but well done, well priced standard dishes.

  25. @Petrea "We stayed in the 16th when we were there in '06. I found it to be convenient. We were close to the ET! ET! ET! and everything else was mere minutes away on the Metro." Yes, but it depends on where in the 16th. It's a very long arrondissement and the furthest part is really far away from the center.

@Anonymous " The Bistro des Deux Theatres (same "chain") in the 9ième is one of my favorite in Paris." Yes, I saw there is one in the 9th. I HAVE to try it.

@Flore. "My previous boss has that in common with you Eric that he really knows how to live and has excellent relationships with people. [...] He brought me a lot. Should I say such as you? Yes I should too :)" Blush!!
And no, I did not chose it, my father did and yes he his fine, only getting deafer and deafer... ;-)

@Thib. "Did you re-work the photo, to get this bright blue?" Actually I corrected the yellow a little bit to whiten the table cloth. So yes, the flame is a little bluer than normal, but shussshhh!

  26. That makes sense, Eric, of course! We rented an apartment on the Seine directly across from Park Citroen.

  28. Great photo..love the blues!! Did they really flambee it right on the table?? I did this for years in formal French dining rooms in hotels and we used to make Crepes Suzettes[with orange zest]table side on a gueridon. The fact many restaurants no longer do this is because of fire codes and liability, also the lack of formal training for the staff. You know how to enjoy yourself[chez Papa]and that is wonderful! What I miss the most about Parisian restaurants is the "quiet" and the consideration for other diners and their space. In SF eating in a "hot" restaurant is like eating in a gymnasium, acoustically cruel!!

  29. Tonton, my husband and I are always looking for quiet restaurants. He will often ask the staff to turn the volume down on the music and usually they comply. Other patrons thank him, but we rarely think to ask for this ourselves.

  30. Eric - thanks for the link - Deux Theatres is close to my usual hotel so may try to visit at some time - as long as my guests like alcohol (why am I always blessed with people who want a coca light?).

Tonton and Petrea - with you on the quiet - was in a restaurant on rue moufettard and the music was overwhelming. US friend and I quietly commented on it and a few minutes later it was turned down - even though we commented in English and the staff only spoke French - well they pretended they did!

For my birthday earlier this month I treated myself to a meal in a restaurant where they have only just included a translation of the set menus into English (a shame but I guess commercially a good move) all was fine until a party of 6 Spaniards arrived - much as I love Spain they rather spoiled my quiet lunch!

  32. @Eli.."all was fine until a party of 6 Spaniards arrived - much as I love Spain they rather spoiled my quiet lunch!"

LOL!!! I work in hotels and I know exactly what you mean...usually the "Cologne Factor" is enough to choke somebody also...too funny!!

  33. Tonton, re. popular restaurants, besides the noise factor for me is the proximity of the next table. One evening in a crowded East Bay restaurant we had to sit through the marriage proposal (and polite decline) going on between the couple at the table less than 1 1/2 feet away. I don't like having to politely tune out conversations when trying to enjoy a meal with my own companion.
