Paris Marathon 2010

Yesterday (Sunday) was the Paris Marathon. So right after I handed out my old scooter to the lucky winner on ebay! I rushed to the center of the city to catch the runners. As always it is extremely moving to see these people running - sometimes to raise money for charities - and the crowd around encouraging them. As always I also took a zillion photos and made a little Animoto. As a main photo theme, I chose this guy, who is a garçon de café - a waiter - and who ran with his tray (he probably also takes part in the real garçon de café race that we have each year) ! Quite admirable. BTW, if you're wondering about the next PDP picnic, well, look on the right and check what the little grey haired man has to tell you...

  1. My friend from work ran the marathon yesterday. He loves running, and all things French—so it's perfect for him! Great shot, Eric!

  6. That is so funny and cute. I hope he finished the marathon. And you really have a race just for waiters? Are they all dressed up like this too and with their serving trays?

  7. I can't believe this guy could run 26 miles with that tray!! He's a superstar! The animoto is really inspiring and I love the little "alle papa" girl. : ) We just had our LA Marathon a couple weeks ago. Tons of people, too. I love your little Eric avatar putting the moves on those crazy PDP fans, too. Wish I could be there. Not this year, tho. : (

  8. OMG! Eric, that is some fancy footwork! Wish I was able to make it to the picnic, but alas, I won't. But I know there will be lots of photos.

  9. Bring your own water ~ or is it bring your own waiter? Either way, this is a fun photo, Eric! As for your picnic invitation, get down! Those are some seriously cool grooves and wait, is that a Hammond organ I hear in the background? :)

  10. Wonderful shot! And I love your movie. That grey-haired fellow is one fine dancer, Monsieur Tenin. If only I could fly to Paris and join you. Maybe I'll make it for the sixth annual picnic.

  11. Wow! He must be a wonderful runner--of course, he probably runs that far every day serving at his cafe. :) The animoto is awesome! Eric, you are very talented and we thank you.

PDP picnickers: Have a wonderful time!

  12. Shell..."bring your own waiter?" LOL! I like this waiter's style, but might be pushing it to ask how he would do with some Perrier bottles on that tray. In any case, my glass is raised to him and also to Mr. Eric Tenin Roboto. That little dude has da groove juice mojo workin! Some killer soft steppin to the rhythmic brushwork too. Wish I could be at the partay on the Seine just to see the dancers! There are going to be dancers, non? ;-)

  13. ...and how about them drummers behind the waiter? How come they're not running? Oh yeah, they're "rolling."

  14. Looks like hard work to me. But the waiter looks like he's enjoying himself (at this stage).

  15. This photo is such fun. I hope someone informs this gentleman that he is featured on PDP.

LOVE how crazy PDP man busts a move! I have watched the clip more than once and it always makes me laugh. (Had to delete my other comment cause I got the exchange rate backwards.)

  16. Are you dancing as well as your avatar, Eric? ;-)
I'll do my best to attend the picnic. But you know that usually on Sundays, I'm not in Paris, but in Cheverny, with my family...
... But maybe I'll come with the family ;-)

  17. I certainly think your avatar is much more than "xtranormal"...more like superxtrabeyondnormal. Really well done and I wish I had a magic carpet to get me there for the picnic. I know! I will send my avatar!
Your feature shot for the marathon is outstanding. What a guy this waiter is to run with his tray.

  18. The pictures are really beautiful- I've been there yesterday and although I'm really not the sport-interested type, I have to say that the atmosphere makes you stay a lomg time watching these people running. I also caught a sunburn^^ And: I was near the "arrivée" so I saw the waiter finishing! He did it!! :)

  19. Bonjour Eric,
This photo bought back a sea of memories from my very first trip to Paris a long while ago. It must have been the Paris Marathon in April that I cheered on, running through the streets of the Marais yet I remember also hundreds of banana skins at my feet- something to do with fruit sponsors I think. It made me laugh. Thankyou!

  20. Hey Eric,
Where have I been, just discovered PDP last week and what timing. First time trip to Paris planned for Sept 2010. PDP is better than any guide book I have read... will be checking daily.

  21. 'As one would expect, the water stations for the runners are much more refined in the Paris Marathon.'

Wonder if the bottles are glued to the tray? They would be if I were running (perish the thought)

Eric, you little groover! Did you ever work at Legoland by any chance?
Re picnic: Brilliant. I just happen to be free on that weekend. See you there!

  22. Superb. I think I have a post card with the waiters racing on it.

Sadly I am going to arrive in Paris two weeks late for your pic nic and while I would love to be is Paris twice in two weeks I don't think it is possible! As ever look fowrad to the photos. Maybe we could have a virtual pic nic with your very groovy friend ?

  24. The Animoto of the race is great. "Alle Papa!" And I always get teary to see a handicapped person racing on his/her wheels. Just great.

And the little avatar guy, well, I recognized him immediately, of course, and it was conclusive to see him dance: those are Eric's exact moves at every picnic!

Maybe we should all practice and have a film of us doing the "Eric". Shake yer booty!

  25. I am surprised to see how huge the Marathonm was as you only seem to hear cracks about Americans and Flic's being the only ones who run in Paris....

  26. Eric, your running waiter is great! I tell you, once I dragged myself out of bed telling myself, 'You can't miss your 17th Paris marathon!', call yourself a photographer or what?!, I headed straight for a place I thought I'd get some nice shots, but ended up at the tail end of the race. But funnily enough, the end was far more touching that the beginning, as you say. So many great people putting in such effort for so many good causes. You've absolutely caught that spirit here.

  27. @Leonie " I was near the "arrivée" so I saw the waiter finishing! He did it!! :)" Wow, that is incredible, I was not sure he would run the whole thing actually...

@Sab "But funnily enough, the end was far more touching that the beginning, as you say." Some people told me the finish line looks like a war scene. People in tears, covered with blankets...

I'm glad you all loved my dancing people! From now on, I'll send him to work and to the stores. Hang on... this reminds me of... a movie... yes Surrogate!

  28. OMG I love your dancing grey-haired man! I only wish I could accept his invitation. :`(
