Market
Today is the 1st day of the month, therefore a theme day within the City Daily Photo community. Today's theme is pretty easy, as we have plenty of those in Paris: open air markets (check here for a complete listing and here for a map). Instead of showing you a colorful fruit and vegetable display, I chose this "sauerkraut", a typical dish of Alsace (a region in the East of France, close to Germany) that we call in French Choucroute. I took this photo at the Place Monge market in the 5th on the stand of a pork butcher... . ReplyDeleteVery easy to cook. Not very refined not very light but who cares if you share this with love and fun ? Some don't like that at all though. Like my husband. My parents, and specially my mother and my brother love it. I love it too!
....Help! can someone call the diet police!!!...not the picture to see, as I am trying to lose few pounds....oh well, back to my salad for lunch.

ReplyDeleteSoit trop tôt, soit trop tard (joke!). Trop tôt disons puisque je ne sais pas pourquoi mais je mettrais bien l'époque de la choucroute vers octobre-novembre, non...
J'aime bien l'expression: "ça n'a rien à voir avec la choucroute"! Qui est franchement bizarre !
J'ai même un exemple de quelque chose qui n'a strictement rien à voir avec la choucroute ;-)
(il fallait bien !) En rentrant chez moi, il y a quelques minutes, j'ai croisé deux adorables bonnes soeurs (le genre sympa, je précise, car ce n'est pas toujours le cas), toutes deux de blanc-écru vêtues, que la voiture devant moi a laissé traverser. J'ai pensé en les voyant, souriantes et paisibles : tiens, ça, ça ferait une belle photo pour Eric. ;-)
Being of German and French descent, I had this dish a lot as a child and loved it. It is still one of my favorite fall/winter meals. I now try to stick to a mainly vegetarian diet, but there are certain foods I'm not strong enough to give up, and this is one of them! I still indulge every now and again.
ReplyDeleteThis reminded me of another one of my favorites, which you're probably familiar, an Alsatian casserole made with potatoes, gruyere cheese, bacon, and lots of caramelized onions. So delicious! Thank you for bringing back some very pleasant childhood memories. Bon appetit!

Oh, that looks delicious! I have to admit, I'm married to a man whose family is originally from Germany, but he doesn't like this kind of food. When we were first married, I made sausage and saurkraut one evening for dinner; he walked into our (small) apartment and said, "Oh, my, do I need to take that garbage out!" When I replied that the smell was dinner, not the garbage, he was not very pleased and would not eat it. In 15 years of marriage, I've never made it for dinner again. I have had it at other times though since it is SO good! He doesn't know what he's missing!
ReplyDeleteahhhhh, non, c'est trop dur!!! non seulement j'ai l'eau à la bouche devant cette choucroute (alors qu'il n'est que 10h du matin ici au Colorado), mais en plus j'ai vécu de nombreuses années au dessus de ce marché de la Place Monge (je vérifiais du coin de l'oeil l'installation des étals). Nostalgie quand tu nous tiens ;-)
ReplyDeleteBeing alsatian myself (no, we do not bark!), I love that stuff, surkrut (en alsacien). It is getting quite international, I cooked some in Cyprus, and you can get it easily here in Spain as well.

ReplyDeleteTerrific food foto! My parents featured a variation of this (with a much less elaborate meat selection) at our dinner table regularly when I was a child. I think my cousin still may get teased that she loved sauerkraut so much she couldn't wait for it to be served at dinner and got caught eating some right out of a can!
Lovely, lovely shot. How I wish I were in Place Monge right now. Sigh. . . Thank you for at least taking us there, and elsewhere in beautiful Paris, visually every day.

Eric, c'était Place de la Porte de Saint Cloud, elles traversaient pour aller vers les arrêts de bus. Avec le ciel bleu et la lumière d'aujourd'hui, c'était pas mal... Mais je suis très impatiente de voir la photo de demain !
