Mailbox

It's labour day (la fête du travail) in Paris today, but I won't be able to show you Lilly of the valley (the flower  symbol of the day) because it's a theme day today. Theme: mailbox. I showed several mailboxes on this blog, but here is one again: the one just in front of my home! FYI, apparently the first mailboxes in France were installed in Paris during the 17th century, but the first postal service was really created during the 19th century. See more boxes around the world, thanks to the City Daily Photo community.

  2. Charming, and I love the angle. I will, however, miss your Lily of the Valley image this year. :)

  3. I love the angle you chose !!!
This mailbox looks like a nice little robot waiting for our letters. I sometimes think of the pleasure of writing a letter, closing the envelop, sticking a stamp and posting it in a mailbox.
    Love it!!...

  5. This mailbox is rather small and petite compared to the rather obese ones we have plopped about our US hamlets. He does appear to be enjoying the attention of your lens as I think I detect a slight smile. Nice, nighttime shot. Enjoy your Labor Day!

  6. As a former Postal Worker Union Member, I want to wish everyone Happy Labour Day....I just wonder if the next generation will still use them?

  7. Coltrane is right—this is much cheerier than our big old mailboxes. And you know I love that perspective! (Mais j'adore les brins de muguet du 1ere mai. Peut-etre un autre jour, mon ami?)

  9. It does look like a robot from the angle you took the picture.

I'm sorry too that you didn't show an image of Lily of the Valley.

  10. But if there was no Postal Service for 200 years, didn't those mail boxes get awfully full?

  11. It looks like a smiling, lemony PEZ Dispenser! It made me smile as well. Merci, Eric!

  14. What a lovely yellow mailbox! And what a lovely use of the famous Tenin Perspective. I agree with those above that this mailbox is so much more chic than the US mailboxes, ours are such a plain blue and large and squat. Tres elegant!

  15. I've come begging for a "papal pardon" for forgetting Theme Day!!! I'll try and do better next month.

I'm sure you were flat on your back on the street (watch the dog poo!) in order to get this fine angle! LOL

  16. There are 2 slots, and I need help remembering what they are for. One, is for mail delivered to France, the other is for foreign destinations???
My only experience with the mail is in the airport for delivering my VAT refund and have no idea if the mailboxes in the rest of France are consistant with the ones in the airport.

  17. Phxcdg, my experience doesn't include mailboxes in airports, rather the ones of the countryside.
And, when there are 2 slots, it is quite simple, one is for local (i.e my village, my town or sometimes my "département") and the other one is for... the rest of the world!!

  18. I am noticing that most mailboxes are either yellow or red, do you know why?

  19. That's it! In the airport, it is for Paris, then the other is for all other destinations!!! Etranger confused me and I thought it was for international destinations.
Will you be my constant companion for interpretation in your country? I get into lots of trouble.

  20. @ Eric, you should have set a bouquet of Lily of the Valley on top of the mailbox, and ... Voila! ;)

I agree with Martin (#7) the mailboxes are possibly an endangered species, as well. How much longer will we use them? I for one, use a lot more email, texts (SMS, MMS), and other forms of digital media than I do written mail these days. Right now, all "official" sort of mail seems to be coming in hard copy, but for how long? Banking is done online, bills are electronic, too... Who can predict if that mailbox will be in use 20 years from now. I bet they'll be going the way of the telephone booths.
