Musée Maillol, again!

You must think I spend my time in the Maillol museum for I already posted many photos of the place. The thing is that they often have interesting exhibitions, so on top of the usual Maillol sculptures I'm never tired of seeing, I also enjoy their temporary stuff. At the moment, they have a Russian paintings exhibit called l'Avant-garde Russe (that is paintings from the beginning of the 20th century). It's a difficult one; you need to "study" a bit to enjoy it thoroughly, but it's worth it ;). And it allowed me to take a cool photo, so...

Another tribute to the musée Maillol

Here is another musée Maillol photo... I saved it because I really like its framing; I took it on the first floor (for Americans: 2nd floor!) where they had - and still have until March 23, this temporary Russian painter exhibit from the Georges Costakis collection. They also have a special tribute to Dina Vierny, the muse of Maillol, the one who modeled for him and opened the museum in 1995 and who just died at the age of 90.

Return to Musée Maillol

One of the lesser-known museums by visitors to Paris is the musée Maillol (59-61, rue de Grenelle , 7th arrondiseement). Opened in 1995, it is actually the collection of the Dina-Vierny Foundation named after the private collector, and one of Aristide Maillol’s models. I cannot say if the subject of this photo is a “close-up” of Mme. Dina-Vierny, but I’ve done my breast to bring you as much information as possible!
PS: I am currently on vacation so I cannot reply to your comments. I'll read them when I return, on May 7.

Peace!

There is nothing like a statue by Maillol to look a the bright side of life! Or course it helps when it's located near le Louvre, when there is a deep blue sky in the background and when there is a little ray of sun to wrap it up! In fact this sculpture is not meant to cheer us up, for it's dedicated to the inhabitants of Port-Vendres, a small town located in the Languedoc-Roussillon (the most Southern part of France you can find!), who died during WWI. Still, it's magnificent (and we should be thankful to Dina Vierny, the muse of Maillol, for giving his work to the French government  in 1964!)

Return to the Maillol Museum

Aren't I lucky. Not only do I live in the most beautiful city in the world (LOL!) but on top of that I got hundreds of happy birthday messages from you all! Thank you very much indeed, even though I did not have enough time to answer every single one of you personally. Today's photo was taken in the Maillol Museum where I went - again! - last Sunday and caught a tourist in the act of taking a picture ;) The painting in the background is by CarlConrad Felixmüller and is part of the current exhibit "Germany: the black years".

Last rays of sun

The sun is back for a few days and since Parisians know they will have to wait until April or May to sit and lay outside again, they tend to take advantage of it as much as they can! Besides, is there something more beautiful than a Maillol Statue in the Louvre garden (this one is called Montagne and it was made in 1937)? I did not think so!

Snow alert (part II)

I know you're going to say you already saw one of these Maillol sculptures covered in snow 2 days ago... But to be honest I really hesitated between the last one and this one (if you noticed, you can almost see the Eiffel Tower in the background in this one) and since I heard we have a good chance of snowfall today (Monday) again, I thought I could post a second one... Besides, judging from your comments last time, I think you will enjoy it too. Not to mention it's a peaceful way of starting the year! Have I made enough excuses?!

L'Espérance

If you happen to be in Paris these days (until the end of August) you have to stop by La Madeleine church. They currently have on display (all around the church) a few sculptures by Louis Derbré which are absolutely stunning. This one is called L'Espérance (hope), it is pretty tall and it's really beautiful.I must confess I did not know who Louis Derbré was, but I found out he used to "hang out" with Maillol and Rodin in the 60s, so no wonder he's talented! Have a look at some other photos I took there.

Another Maillot shot!

Do you remember this photo that I took last winter? Well, here is a close up, that I took a few days ago. It's probably my favorite Maillol Statue in the Louvre gardens. It's called La nuit (the night), it was made in 1909 and it's really breath taking (especially at sunset).

A (rainy) day at the museum

There's a positive side to everything... Since it's raining and cold in Paris, isn't that the perfect moment to go to the museum? And when it comes to museums, Paris a lot to offer. I'm talking... a lot! I counted no less than 141 in this list. Some are famous of course (like le Louvre or Rodin), some are less known, even though they are worth a visit (like le musée des arts décoratifs or Maillol). My favorite one is probably the Musée d'Orsay, in front of which I took this photo. As you can see they installed this big Impressionist canvas by Renoir, just in front of it. Pretty cool.

Snow dress

I posted a lot of Aristide Maillol sculptures on the blog, but this morning, when I saw it had snowed during the night, I could not help but stopping by the Louvre gardens and take a photo. Snow is rare in Paris, that's why we love it when it happens; it gives an extra flavor to the city (even when it's just a thin layer, like in this photo). Soon it will be Monday and life is going to go back to normal... Have a nice, resting weekend.

Letting the grass grow under my feet...

After a whole morning sorting the stuff in my cave (cellar) I took a few hours off to enjoy the last days of Paris sun. God was it gorgeous! I went to Le Louvre gardens, where they surprisingly allow people to lay on the grass among the beautiful Maillol statues, and enjoyed a sip of coffee. I was not the only one, for sure...

In the Louvre gardens

I took this photo just before my departure in the Louvre gardens and I really love it. The statue in the middle is by Maillol of course (there are plenty in these gardens!) and the color and the trees are by mother nature, a true artist too!

La Lady du Louvre

In the Louvre Gardens, where I passed by yesterday evening, there are several sculptures by Maillol. All of them are absolutely superb - I showed several ones on this blog, but never this one (whose name I forgot to note...). This garden is perfect for a picnic BTW: no cars, beautiful sculptures everywhere and comfy grass!

Theme day: No!

Well, it's July 1st, and, as usual it's a theme day within the City Daily Photo community... Guess what, this month's theme is: "post a picture of a sign in your town that includes the text 'no'", like it's easy and/or photogenic?! I had to actually produce the photo(!) with a little help from 1) Aristide Maillol who sculpted these magnificent 3 nympheas, 2) Jacques Froissant, a famous French blogger who brought a piece of paper and a marker, 3) Alexis Hubeau for the art direction and... Laurence Thurion who gathered all these people - and many more - for a Champagne party (you get the picture now, right?! LOL!)

Come on baby come on, take this photo!

I couldn't help smiling when I saw this Nymph in the Louvre gardens 3 days ago. She looks so modern, so inviting, that it's hard to believe she was sculpted in 1930. Anyway as you probably have guessed already her "father" is Aristide Maillol and you cannot miss her if you wander around the Louvre (not far away from the Pyramid). It's Monday, in 2 days I'll be on the plane, far, far away from Paris...

Pascin Exhibition

You may remember when I first mentioned this wonderful Paris museum called the Musée Maillol (after the name of French sculptor Aristide Maillot) at the occasion of Marilyn Monroe's last sitting. Well, at the moment they have another stunning temporary exhibition: paintings by Jules Pascin, a painter who was born in 1885 and committed suicide at the peak of his success in 1930. His work is really good and beautifully exhibited in this must see museum.

Marilyn Monroe 's last sitting

You remember the Mickey Mouse exhibit a couple of days ago? Well today, thanks to my colleague Coralie Donas who took this picture, I'd like to show you the exhibit of another monument in the American (world?) culture: Marilyn Monroe. If your happen to be in Paris until the end of October - and if you have not seen it already in the Brooklyn Museum - don't miss this "Last Sitting" that Bern Bert Stern shot in 1962. She is more beautiful and sensual than ever on all pictures. Find out more on the musée Maillol site.

Warm winter

I have only a few days left in Bangkok and pretty soon I'll be back in Paris... I'm not too happy to go back to winter of course, but the good news is that unlike in North America, winter seems to have been - and still to be - pretty mild this year. So mild, this Maillol nymph does not need to wear any clothes! Have a good week everyone.
